Need help with layout for Master Bedroom Closet
Comments (3)Neat. That's large enough to be considered a dressing room, I think. Since I struggle with a 42" x 14" closet, I'm really happy for you to get that space. I think the first thing you need to do is look at the clothes that you have. How many feet of hanging space will you need? Double rods will save a lot of space, but that depends on how you hang trousers and such--by the hem with those clamp hangers, or folded over a hanger? How much long hanging space will you need for long dresses and skirts and coats? Given that you will have more hanging space than you did before, what do you have folded in drawers now, that you will be hanging in the new closet? You might do a consultation or two with a closet company or the closet designer at a home store. They will have the knowledge of specialized storage units that would work well for you. My first instinct is to do double rods on the 12' wall, a single rod on the 5' wall, with shelves above everything. (I'd put all the out of season clothing at the window end of the closet.) Then go wild with shelves and drawers on the 8' wall. Put a full length mirror on the wall that the door opens against, and a bench or stool somewhere to sit down and put on shoes. I've added a link to a video of a woman giving a tour of her closet--the configuration is a little like your space, except that you might have more room. It's long and she rambles a bit, but she does a decent job of explaining what's stored where and why. There are many other closet tours on YouTube that could give you some ideas. Here is a link that might be useful: organized closet...See MoreNeed help with Master Closet layout
Comments (7)Keep in mind that hanging clothes take 2' of space, so the way the closet is drawn is a bit misleading with the spaces marked 'rod and shelf'. (The line is where the rod is, but the clothes will stick out about another foot.) Also, where perpendicular rods meet in the corner, there is dead space that can't be accessed if clothes are hung to the maximum width. So, as drawn with 'rod and shelf' on 3 sides, the space would be a bit like the top left mockup below, with purple being hanging space and orange lines being dead space. With the door as drawn, I would be inclined to dedicate the whole back wall to hanging rod(s). Then the opposite wall could be for shallow shelves or shoe racks. Keep in mind that you can't anchor anything into the wall that houses the pocket door. (Also that wall will be thicker than typical.) (Top right pic.) If you can reorient the door to the bottom wall, you'll have two long walls for hanging clothes and shallow storage (bottom pic.) Not sure if that's possible or desirable; some folks like walking through the bathroom to get to the closet and some don't. In any case I'd use the top wall for a wall hung mirror. And sorry, I didn't include your dresser. CAVEAT: These are noodlings from a non-expert! I'd take your drawing to someplace like the Container Store and see if they have some clever ideas....See MoreNeed help with Master Closet layout
Comments (4)If this were my closet, I'd have the upper shelf around the perimeter, but I would have the single and/or double rods on each side. That would give you 13+ feet of single hung rod (more if double hung). In the middle, directly in front of the door, I would have the dresser. I would even mount cubbies or shelves above the dresser. Shoes can be stored on racks under the clothes or on the shelves over the dresser. With the above configuration, you would just step into the closet and turn left or right to access the hanging clothes. (Dont forget that you can install another shelf over the door on the inside of the closet. Handy to store items you need to keep - but don't access offen like tax forms, kid's artwork to save, etc. Either have a light in the center of the ceiling or install a plug in lamp/light on top of the cubbies/shelf in the center....See MoreNeed Help with Master Bed Bath and Closet Layout
Comments (10)I like the reflection you'll get from the window onto your mirrors above vanity. I like the semi-private toilet allowing 2 in bathroom. What about doing a built-in linen as suggested (more of a cabinet than a closet), which means no door needed. Then move door to the bathroom up near all the other doors. You'd need a different kind of door - it puts all 3 in the same spot and you'll have door swinging issues, but a pro here could offer suggestions on that. Would love to see photos. Bermuda - wow :)...See MoreJeffrey R. Grenz, General Contractor
