Need help with master bedroom/bathroom redesign
So our master bedroom, bathroom, and closet are very small. We are trying to find a way to make everything bigger. I have an idea (I will post in a reply) but I want to see if there are other options that anyone else can think of. The blue area is the current master bedroom, bathroom, and "walk-in" closet. The plan is to grab part of the hall bathroom (yellow highlight), possibly part of the furnace room that doesn't look like it is being used (pink highlight), and as a last resort turn the little porch area into a covered extension of the house (green highlight).
I absolutely hate the wasted space of the little hallway when we enter the room. It is such a waste of space when space is what we need. We want to keep the bedroom location where it is because there are big beautiful windows out front that we want to keep and it doesn't make sense to have those in a bathroom.
Any thoughts?

5 years agoHere is my first shot at it. Input would be appreciated. This doesn't change the size of the bedroom sadly, but gives us more closet space (which we REALLY need) and a master bath that has both a shower and tub that seems to be necessary in master bathrooms these days.

I think moving the doors further into the hall will work, and should be very easy for the builder to do. We'd lose a little more exterior hallway space (the bedroom doors were originally at the dotted line), but having the longer hallway within the master bedroom will be more dramatic. Comments (5)I like my first idea best as far as use of space. I know people say not to put toilets on an outside wall. We had one in our last house in Iowa, but we had 2X6 construction. I don't know how high your window is, but I'm guessing the toilet would fit under there. The shower would be 5 feet long or shorter if you want a wider space to get to the toilet. (kind of tight the way I have drawn). You could do a 5 and half foot long shower and do an angled door at the left end to allow room between the shower and toilet. The vanity would be about 7 feet long, unless you do a 60 inch vanity with a linen cabinet at the door. I would reverse entry door swing if you do that.. The second top right could work and you would still have a small closet. The bottom left plan would require waterproofing your front window. Hopefully someone will give you other ideas. Comments (10)Can you solve the door issue for Room C by making it an outswing? When open it would then be against the wall with what I assume is some kind of air return / chase. In your bathroom you might also gain some privacy for the toilet by pushing the shower up towards the closet and then putting the toilet on the shower side. Then you can put the linen closet or cabinet across from the toilet (that could also hold toilet paper for when you realize you're out ;) Would be shallower but the back of a 40" deep linen closet would probably be fairly inaccessible anyway. Comments (11)When I looked for houses I specifically wanted no new baths or kitchens for I wanted to choose my finishes. Also, the things we pick today might not appeal to buyers in five years. So for every buyer you lose for not spending money you gain one who would rather take a discount and spend more on doing it to their tastes. This being said, I have just spent a lot of money adding a master bath to my house and am happy I did. First I had no preexisting master bath, secondly we had no mortgage and received a substantial bonus to pay for it in cash, and most importantly I plan to be here until after my kids finish college and my oldest is 11 so will not be willingly selling any time soon. If you go into it as a pleasure purchase not an investment that is great just do not fall for the oh so popular myth sold to promote the economy and bought by consumers to ease their consciences over being overextended because they want it all but can not afford it. 5 years agoI would put the door to your master bedroom off the entry foyer. That would get rid of the hallway you dislike and allow more room for your closet/bathroom.
