Flooring advice

Current status:

Two story home

Upstairs: Office, bedrooms & hallway - beige carpet

Two bathrooms - white porcelain tile

Stairs coming down: Steps - beige carpeting

Handrail, post, and corners of tread- honey maple

Spindle - white

Downstairs: Entryway - beige tile

Living room, dinning room, & hallway - beige carpet

Kitchen & family room (facing each other) - Gray vinyl planks

One of the bedrooms and office, face each other, with the hallways in between.

Looking to convert the bedroom (facing the office) into a 'craft' room and thinking of putting in dark vinyl planks in both office and 'craft' room.

The bedrooms (for now anyway) will keep their carpets

Will be (in the future), changing the stair steps, handrail, spindle, posts to a dark/white combo.

Questions:

  1. What do we replace the upstairs carpet with (we prefer not to put in hardwood)?

  2. How do we transition the upstairs hallway, with stairs coming down, with entry hallway facing the

stairs?

Please note that we eventually be replacing the carpet in the dinning room, living room, and hallway dividing them, with different flooring (looking at porcelain tile, but not sure of coloring).

Thanks in advance for any advice/suggestions/etc.
