Not knowing any other dimensions, just looking at the pictures, it seems that if it is only 4' deep, the rods will go on either side. It doesn't seem to me that you will be capturing much, if any additional space. Before going to that much effort I would consider looking into a closet organization solution. It is surprising sometimes how much you can fit into a small space witha properly designed combination of rods, shelves, and drawers.

Why 4’ deep that makes no sense unless you run rods the 4’ depth which IMO seems silly and a huge waste of space. I would check out things like Pax from Ikea for the space and certainly not 4’ deep

I guess my question is not about the depth as I could make it any depth. Right now the closet depth is 2 feet so I planned to double that. But I could make it 5 or 6... I assume walk in closet is 4x4 minimum. We like to have one and it's good to have one to increase home value with nice shelving inside like this:

So I guess my only question is the way the wall coming out like that (red lines), would it look OK?

Why don't you extend the "new wall" towards the entry door and make a complete walk-in closet? There would be a small hallway into the bedroom with an entry into the closet. Each hanging section takes about 24" so a 4 foot wide closet could have clothes on either side but no place to walk in the middle.

If you go with a 4x4 walk-in closet you might as well save yourself the trouble and keep what you have. Remember that you will need to plan for a spot to actually stand on e you walk into the closet, and that hanging rods need 2' of depth for correct function. So in essence you would be boxing in a 2' walkway for yourself and gaining no storage.

Minimum size for a walk-in is generally accepted to be 5x5.

I agree with others that a killer closet system would be a good investment. You could add free-standing pieces that run along the wall all the way to the electrical too if you need more space.

If you're determined to have a walk-in, I would choose to build out that whole wall. The image of the closet you show is probably about 8' wide and 4' deep. So take the closet the entire length of the wall from corner to where the electrical starts. Leave the hanging rods where they are and add shelving units and drawers on each side.

Sheri - That makes sense since I have not shop for the storage system themselves yet. But by looking around, for example this one is 4' width minimum:

It's only 13" depth so I can have one on each side for total of 26". That still leaves some space to walk in.

Maybe I am missing something from the measurement perspective?

Regarding the idea of expanding the wall to take over the hallway, would that make the closet kinda weirder from the inside as it is now more of an L-shape?

Agree with everybody that you need more depth. That's not really your question.

It won't look like a box, really, if you put something into the space by the door. It could be a nice place for an arm chair with a small table and reading lamp, for putting on shoes or checking your phone while partner freshens up. You could also put a large dresser there to hold your folded clothes, taking some pressure off the closet that way too, with a mirror over it. As long as you do something intentional with the space, nobody will think anything about the turn. As a last resort, you could put a shallower linen closet there or a bookcase...
