Had I not made sure mine were centered with the countertop/work surface, the electician would have no doubt centered them over the cabinets themselves. I think most people have overhang on one side only so that's fine in most cases. But we, like yourself, had overhang on the side opposite the range but also on one of the long sides of the island which made the long side asymmetrical. I wanted to make sure my pendants were centered over the island's countertop. Otherwise the lights would be shifted to one side. No one will hit their head on them. That shouldn't even be a concern. Here is ours. See how different it would look if the lights were not over the overhang on the right? If this is how you want them, you should have them move the lights. It's not that big of a deal to do so. Our electrician didn't center four lights properly in the house which we realized last minute. They fixed it AND the ceiling around it within a day. I would have never known the difference if I wasn't to particular and hadn't already noticed!

Thanks all. My husband hated the Kichler Quinn. He hates drum lights. He is difficult! He is set on a light that doesnt hang down over the kitchen table. I may be able to change that, but i'm not sure. He's very set in his ideas. So far I am thinking of either the Hudson Valley Darien in Antique Nickel with a white glass shade (8" size) Or the Boston pendant on Circa Lighting's page in Antique Nickel Or I could go back with the pendants I had in my last house, which were Hubbardton Forge. They dont have a nickel finish, but I could get Smoke, Black, Burnished Steel...In my last house I had black, but the part right above the glass globe was copper. It was very pretty And then I am sort of liking one of these lights for over the table (if I went with HF) or Still unsure on the Hubbardton Forge though. I like the lights when I see them in a room, but I'm not always sold just seeing a picture of the light by itself.

Jess, Love it! I think you definitely made the right choice to omit the island pendants! We are still leaning toward no island pendants as well. I already said this above, but, there will be a breakfast nook at the end of the island and a dining table along the front side... and I want a big George Nelson bubble saucer light probably over the dining table and something else hanging above the nook table. I think that'll be enough hanging lights in that open room! I also don't want to take away from the view out the windows in the nook. Who knows, we may change our minds, but my husband says he will support my "No island pendants" choice if that is what I want. I will come back and post a pic of what we finally end up going with!

I would not do a pendant in this kitchen, you wont get the impact because you can only do one and it cannot be large or it would look out of place over the counter top. another factor is your ceiling height, which I assume to be 8ft, this means a large pendant really wont work as you will not get much cord drop. I know you are looking for pretty here, I get that, but this room will change a lot once the wall goes back in and the counter is placed. if i was you I would have them center an electrical box where you want the pendant on the idea that they can come back in and change it to a remodel pot if you decide against it.
