I cannot use icon or shortcuts on desktop

when I click on a shortcut on the desktop nothing will happen. I have a new icon in the taskbar on the left side called task view and I didn't put it their. We also had our electricity go off with know warning so no time to shut system down. Have no idea what to check for thanks

Not working with one particular icon/shortcut, or all of them? Do the links in the start menu or taskbar work? Hate to ask the obvious, but yave you done the obligatory reboot?

Task view is part of Windows 10, you can do a quick Google search on it for more info.

only century shortcut works, my trash dump doesn't work either. Yes all work in start menu and taskbar work . I have done a reboot.

Check in the control panel under network connections for your dial up icon. Ok...done...now have shortcut...Thanks! To get back to your categories click on 'switch to category view' on the left side of the control panel. I used to be able to do that, but now there are the 34 things on a white screen, with nothing to the left of them. I have a choice of seeing them as thumbnails tiles icons list or details when I click on 'View' at the top of the control panel What now brown cow?

Sure - Eitherway. Right click the desktop. Choose make shortcut.. name it whatever,, browse for the file. If it's more than two files I make a 'NewFolder' for Money on the desktop and make shortcuts inside it to them.

Was the restore point in blue and sort of inset with larger numbers? You have to use the restore dates that are there, not just any date. If you haven't created a restore point before this, create one now. However it will not help you with this because you cannot go back to a day before the restore point was created. If the program was not affected you can create new icons. Try clicking on the program in --start--all programs and see if it comes up. If it does then go out and click on start again. Go to your program and click once to highlight it then go to the little side page that has the icons and drag them to the desktop

Not sure what you mean, but if I am working and want to see my desktop I go to the right of clock and date in the notification area and click on the narrow vertical strip. it will pull up desktop and it will be on top of what you are doing. If you click there again the page you were on will be there.

Ok, its likley not malware, but a good place to start. Ensure your antivirus/anti-malware software is up to date and run a full system scan. Then, check for and install any Windows updates. They may overwrite a possibly corrupt system file. If there are still issues after that, you can try options 1, 2, and 4 as needed from here https://ugetfix.com/ask/how-to-fix-non-responsive-desktop-shortcuts-in-windows-10/. Just dont install their tool.
