How to clean painted walls without leaving streaks and smudges?
Comments (9)It would make sense to keep some distance between yourself and subcontractors, and specific tools, if you can simply specify the quality and cleanliness of the finished product. If you're still not satisfied with the walls, you've greatly muddied the waters by mixing your labor with a sub's, and by telling the builder to use specific means and methods--rather than the walls must be free of dust, streaks, and smudges. Sounds like you're spending a lot of time being a GC on this job, increasing your risk. while still paying a GC....See MoreDemifloyd- Do you still have a room painted Terracotta Sand?
Comments (17)Sis2two--my apologies, I've been out of town and my busiest time of year I'm just now getting back to this thread. This weekend I took some updated photos--most of these were taken over five years ago and of course there have been changes, I STILL haven't finished "decorating" everything and still hanging and changing art, bedding, furniture, window coverings and accessories! Unfortunately, I had just updated my Mac to Maverick, and now it won't recognize Iphoto and says it needs to be updated. I'm going to have to have someone help me do that so I can get my pictures from my camera on IPhoto. Anyway, so many members were fun and helpful when I was first building and decorating and it was encouraging at the time I was first on this forum to see where others had made progress on their homes, so I will indeed update the album and share as soon as I get that straightened out and a few projects finished, hopefully in a month or two. In the meantime, I pulled several photos of the Terracotta Sand in the dressing room--as you know EK colors "change" because of the pigments, so I tried to find representations of different light. I've also included a few other photos of the house. The color in the bedroom just outside the dressing room is EK Adobe and they are very similar, I think it's my favorite color it turns to a rose gold with the afternoon sunset. I couldn't find the bathroom in the google album that mixed my photos with others, so I will post a photo of the black and white Thibault (if memory serves me correct) wallpaper in my guest bath. Comments (13)Yes, by crumbling I just mean little pieces crumble out in the holes where nails were removed, or where the niches were. There are also some larger cracks running along the sides and base of the wall, where the wood furring was nailed in. The niches were boarded up with drywall and then plastered over, so we knocked out the plaster and ripped out the drywall pieces, so there is some plaster crumbling around the edges of the niches (how to fix those up will be a separate post because I can only deal with one thing at a time!). We are definitely keeping the niches -- we didn't know they were there when we saw the place, until we realized all the other apartments in the building had them. Once we removed the mirrors and saw the outlines in the wall I became determined to restore them at all costs, and I'm so glad we did. I'm all about trying to incorporate the original style/design of the place and honor the pre-war glory that this place once had. The rest of the apartment has archways so niches match nicely and really tie things together. We were definitely planning on using plaster patching compound rather than regular joint compound after reading that the latter is not good for plaster walls. I had not heard of using TSP before but that sounds like a good idea. So far we have been using a wallpaper stripping spray (Chomp), which works pretty well. We've used up one bottle already though and are about to buy another -- you think the TSP will work better?...See MoreHow to achieve sand swirl texture on ceiling after repair
Comments (2)I've never used hot mud, but I'd apply the texture in the final skim coat (I'm very neat when I work w/ mud :) Practice creating the pattern on a separate piece first, so you know how to achieve the match. A brush or comb (something with teeth) is most commonly used to make that swirl pattern....See Moresloyder
