Any Jade experts out there?

So I bought 3 jades sharing a small pot back in May. I repotted them, but I didn’t put too much effort in spacing them out. Now, after growing nice and full with the help of LEDs for the past few months, I am thinking that I should split them up in the spring.

My question is, would the plants’ roots have grown so tangled together by now that it would be risky to split them up? The largest of the triplets is causing the others to grow diagonally.

I‘m a novice succulent grower and would appreciate any input! Thank you!

Hopefully you can untangle them. You could soak the rootball for a while, and then set it on some newspaper or paper towels to soak extra moisture off. They may be easier to pull apart. If potted in to much peat and it was allowed to dry up, it could be more difficult - peat could be as hard as rock. If needed, some roots can be trimmed off. Jades are very resilient, and should grow more roots easily. I always loose some when repotting, and it didn't kill any plants yet. Even if all roots are gone, just pot it up and treat as rootless stem cutting: pot into well draining mix, do not water for a while (no roots - no water :), and it will grow new roots.

I prefer 1 plant per pot, but some like potful of stems.

Agreed with rina, you should be able to get them apart without too much struggle and even if you have to prune the roots a bit it’s a very resilient plant and will bounce back quickly with the right care.

dallasbill, I just checked with DH who tried it both ways, and he said the chain saw as you described it worked best for the wires, but the hot knife was easier for him when doing the boxes. DH also said to be sure your HVAC guys run a Manual J before determining what size furnace/AC you need, or it will be oversized. Almost all of the HVAC guys we talked to based the size of the unit on square footage, even after DH explained how tight the house would be. He said if they won't do a Manual J, use someone else who will. He also said to be sure that the drywallers don't glue the drywall to the ICF foam. If they do, and if you ever need to remove the drywall (leaky roof?), the foam will be pulled off in chunks when you pull the drywall off. Good point about the holes needed through the ICF walls. We had professionals do most of ours, since the largest were 6". We were the GCs and weren't sure exactly where they all were going to be, so we couldn't preset them before the concrete was poured. It was MUCH cheaper to have them come out just once to drill, since they charged per visit and per hole. We had: --4 hose bibs --2 make up air (1 for woodstove, 1 for HRV) --exhaust air for HRV --hood duct --dryer vent --2 geothermal pipes (preset before pour) --well pipe (drilled by installer) --gas line --2 electrical lines (due to geothermal) --central vac exhaust --central vac to garage --septic/sewer pipe --sump pump pipe --gas pipe for patio grill --telephone/cable Anne

Any elderberry experts out there?

The best flower fragrance and flavor is with the European species (Sambucus nigra). When I grew Sambucus canadensis the flowers only were fragrant during certain parts of the day and only for short periods of time. Anything I made from the flowers had no flavor or fragrance. It could be different in your area.

Intus finishes: Any chemists or PVC film experts out there?

We have dark vinyl windows. Did not go with Intus because at the time we were looking they had not sold any windows in the US and their quality was not what we were looking for. I believe our color is about like the Intus walnut and it is that color inside as well as outside. We would have liked red on the outside, but two different colors substantially increased the cost. Since we are in the south, the film is on a white PVC rather than a dark PVC due to the heat. I cannot speak about longevity though as we have only been in our house for 3 years without any problems.

Any Radon Pump experts out there?

I dont think a 45 will stop debris, but you could put one 90 on the top and not glue it, if it has problems freezing up then its easily removed. I personally live in a super cold area, and I had to insulate my radon pipe to stop it from freezing at the termination, and it is straight up.

Sure you can, but I think it looks nice the way it is. Maybe leave it a year or so until you feel it's too large for the pot. Hope that pot has a hole.

I had a pot with 4 compact jades in it. I thought it looked nice and I let it grow for 2 years (I think, maybe 3). When the plants started really crowding and impacting the growth, like bent stems, I separated them. And I put them in better mix, too!

Here's the original 6 inch pot - growing outdoors all year long. You can see they are started to push each other.

Separated - They ultimately needed some pruning to improve the shape, but then again, jades always need a little nip and tuck. LOL I like to use rocks to prop my plants.

So as long as your plants are still healthy, go for the look you like the best.

I did the same thing this fall with my old jade. It had severely over grown its pot so I was just planning to pot it bigger and decided to clean out the old soil at the same time.

Long story short it turns out it was 9 separate plants. It took a lot of work hosing down the root ball and wiggling the plants apart but they all separated and are doing great in their own pots now.

Yours looks like it should be fairly easy to separate.
