still new to citrus, first fruiting and leaf drop questions
Comments (5)When I first bought a house in FL 25 years ago the nurseryman I bought my first citrus trees from said "don't let them bear any fruit for the first 2 years," as they need that time to develop their root system. Younger trees do not have the energy to develop strong roots and produce a good crop of fruit. If this is only their second season in your yard, it is probably too soon to let it bear fruit. Your fertilizing schedule sounds ok, and it does sound like your tree is getting enough water. I suspect that as you begin to harvest the fruit, and as the tree puts out new growth it will perk up again. I'd also limit the number of fruits you let the trees carry this coming season to 12-18, depending on how much it grows this year....See MoreCitrus leaf discoloration
Comments (8)An excess of iron creates an imbalance in the soil. It can even tie up other micro-nutrients, causing deficiencies in (for example) zinc and manganese. I strongly urge that you contact your local extension service and arrange for a soil test. They will tell you how to collect the sample or samples and they'll send it off to the lab. The pH probes are notoriously inaccurate, and with some important citrus trees at stake, I'd sure go with a lab test. Florida extension still performs this service for VERY little money. Once you've applied the fertilizers to your soil, you can't take it back. Makes good sense, doesn't it, to obtain some accurate information from the soil tests first? Comments (7)It is certainly a factor; but it more a reason that I don't support "cocktail" trees, meaning more than one variety on a single trunk. There are always some that need more food than others, some that grow faster than others, some that need a different NPK ratio, etc. Anyway, it is a nice looking tree, so I wish you luck One more thing, if you do plant it in the ground, I would be sure to bury that root flare at the bottom; exposed root flares are fine in containers; but in the soil they invite critters and diseases that like to feed on roots....See MoreCitrus leaf drop, how much is to much?
Comments (1)I consider any leaf drop to many but when you bring a tree inside most of them drop leaves. Pictures help. There is no reason to bring them in a dark hallway, but just place them out of sunlight when they are outside. Time will tell if you have a problem. Ste ve...See MoreVladimir (Zone 5b Massachusetts)
