Design Dilemma Fireplaces Furniture

how should I arrange my furniture?

I can't figure out where to place my furniture in my apartment. the couch is rather long but beautiful and I really want it to be a noticeable feature of the room. when I had it against the left side wall close to where the blinds are it sort of disappeared out of view and becusee that we'll is not as long as the adjacent it looked oddly unsymmetrical. I would prefer if it be facing the tv and the fireplace somehow so I would like the tv either on too of the fireplace or opposite wherever the couch goes. I am eventually planning on adding an accent chair, and a coffee table as well..ignore the ugly rectangular bench in the middle of the room, I'm not keeping it.

I agree the sofa is pretty , DO NOT put TV above that fireplace that brown whatever at the front of the pic needs to go along with all the other clutter on the floor and the bookcase. Then some proper drapes . The problem is the sofa is really nice and all the surrounding stuff really does not work with it. Get a nice cabinet to mount the TV above and put that next to the fireplce then put the sofa on the wall oppositeI actually like the cowhide with the sofa, The easy thing is too remove everything in the space and then only put back waht you need to begin with . So in your case the sofa a cabinet for the TV and the TV The art needs to hang on walls where it it works those 2 pieces on the right wall do not work there so when you buy your TV cabinet make sure it is quite long and with some good storage and get rid of the bookcase. Add some nice drapes hung properly then a coffee table a good floor lamp, then see what else makes sense and let that sofa be the star.

From your pictures, it seems your lovely sofa is too large to place on the shorter wall (opposite the fireplace wall). The longer wall, to right of fireplace looks like a better fit, although the sofa should be moved further down the wall (away from fireplace) than you have it in your first photo. Because of your baseboard heating, I would consider getting a floating TV console and placing the television on that shorter wall. Large art above sofa, and a gallery group of art around TV...

Thanks for quick the reply! I do not receive clients in the room, so I don't need any other chairs. I was contemplating a small chair with an ottoman for reading, but haven't decided yet. The window on the right in my pictures looks out to the backyard, the window on the left looks out to my neighbors. The office is on the second floor. Nothing will distract me, I enjoy glancing out at the windows and the birds. I'm going to add light filtering shades in case the glare gets too bad. I'd like to avoid being in a position where they need to be down all the time because of glare since I like looking out the window so much. The second desk will double as my drawing space and for my makeup. So, I will be reaching for it on a semi-regularly basis.

Let go of the idea that you have to have the sofa or any furniture at all against a wall. The best solution is to "float" the sofa, in your case, to face the fireplace. Get a really nice very large rug, put it in the middle of the room to anchor the space, and place the sofa and coffee table on it. Some shelving to the sides of the fireplace would be an ideal place to place a TV--on the right unless you have a huge TV. A nice easy chair on the left of the fireplace under the window with a floor lamp or shelf lamp behind it would make a cozy reading corner yet would add to your conversational grouping. Do a Google search on "floating a sofa"

@ Nadia Trade that bench spot for two chairs, move the cocktail where those seated on sofa can reach it. Put a drinks table between two chairs, and that is ALL that will fit in the narror space with traffic that runs through the space.

thank you both. this is helpful. I cannot get anything that needs to be installed into the wall as I am renting. the couch I purchased because I intend it to last quite a long time and I don't plan on living here more then a year so I will be able to look for a place the couch will suite better some day. but for now! I can't get rid of the bookcase as it was a gift from my fathrr- I can certainly move it elsewhere tho.

Post a sketch with measurements of the room, openings, windows and doors.... and the furniture that is staying. That will get you some mock ups.

Decluttering and cleaning up this space would go a long way. All the visual junk in the room is distracting from the nice couch. Clean up the stuff on the floor and throw out the trash. Organize and get rid of extraneous items, especially on the bookshelves. Then invest in a couple of side tables and table lamps to help the lighting in the space.
