Corner Drawers instead of Lazy Susan?
Comments (37)toddimt! Thanks so much! I just measured across the opening last night, because my husband had me worried that there just wasn't enough room for anything in that little space! It's over 17", so once the carpenter finishes I think it'll be perfect. I was so so happy to see those specs. Carpenter is out of town so I can't ask him. Are you pleased with your drawers? Can you fit much in them? Do you wish you'd put in a Super Susan instead? I'm still very excited to get the drawers, but I'd love to get other opinions. Thanks so much for your quick reply....See MoreAre Lazy Susans useless or is it just me?
Comments (30)I have never been a fan because one wrong spin...by a child or a grandchild or if you are in a hurry....and you will jumble everything and usually lose something in the very back where it's almost impossible to retrieve. I prefer drawers and I have seen some that slide back into the dead space then swing out. You can also use dishpans or similar bins/basketry to hold things then store them behind each other and move them manually from behind each other as needed. I have also seen a really ingenious lazy susan if you like that sort of thing...and it's much more functional with all the kinks worked out. You can make them! Take 2 identical round cake pans (any size but the same size) and fill the bottom one with a single layer of marbles. Then put the other pan on top of the marbles. This is good for your upper cabinet to hold spices or table condiments. I do want to point out that while lazy susans do help utilize hard to reach spaces in the backs of cupboards, by definition they are ROUND and round things offer less storage than square of the same size...you lose all that space where a square container reaches to the corner. Remember this principle when you choose canisters, tupperware, and other bins and baskets for tight spaces. Round things are a space waster....See MoreAgain with the lazy susan questions. Anyone seen this done?
Comments (33)firsthouse: if you read this, would you be able to measure the front dimensions of your corner? I'm trying to figure out how much wider the left side is than the right so I can talk to my cab guy about it. thank you! katy-lou: I have sort of the same thing now except I wasn't smart enough (pre-GW) to have DH make a shelf stepped back like yours. Both shelves are full depth and although I can keep a lot on them, it kills my back to get down low enough to dig for the stuff on the bottom back. I'm not nice and neat like you and I keep putting more stuff in there because I can so it's constantly shuffling to get out what I want. Your cabs are beautiful, though and I do appreciate the input and pic. I love seeing the different examples of how people make things work....See MoreWhat do you store in your Base Corner Lazy Susan cabinet?
Comments (29)My Ikea lazy susan cab sits right next to my sink cabinet. I've read many posts here where peeps complain that the Ikea susan wastes space (it's a 38x38" cab and there is about 4 or 5 inches of empty space between the shelves and the the cabinet sides. Well, I find this "wasted space" perfect for storing large items upright that don't fit in any other cabinet and that I use when working at the sink. On one side of the susan, I store a super sized cutting board that we use for prepping over the sink/counter and an extra large tray that we use daily to carry dishes and food from the kitchen to the dining room and back. On the other side of the rotating susan we've installed a pull-out double towel rail for my dish towels (my under-sink pull-out holds a trash can and cleaning supplies and I really didn't want to keep my dish towels in there). The bottom holds a foldable step stool The rotating shelves hold my salad spinner, an extra dishpan and colanders of various sizes, a well as small appliances such as the juicer, mixer, food processor, blender etc. Plus I have plenty of space left for new gadgets in the future. :-) During planning our new kitchen, I worried that opening the double doors of the susan cab and retrieving the items on the shelves would would feel awkward, but that's not the case at all. I'm glad I ignored the much repeated advice on this forum, to forgo the corner cab altogether or do a blind corner. Best of luck with your kitchen remodel....See MoreSarah
