Exterior paint color suggestions?
Comments (14)graywings, I was wondering about a complete alternate color scheme since the house next door turned out to be white. So if we *don't* go with white then I might look at a taupe/gray or a sagey silver/gray with black/dark shutters instead. Does that make sense? So here's OUR elevation. It's hard to really tell from a two-dimensional drawing. The left (plain) side with just the four windows to the left of the front door is recessed back while the front door and double porches are pushed forward. Both houses sit on 50 foot lots that are right next to each other. The houses have to have 4 feet clearance to the property line. I know ours has 6 feet to their line. We will be to their right. Here is the neighbors' house: Actually, they've progressed since my last post. I ASSUMED they were doing brick along the bottom because I saw a pile of bricks. But it appears they're only bricking the front steps. The bottom appears to just be painted since the vents are already in place. It didn't enter my mind that they'd only do the steps. I think I've seen some houses just paint the blocks then cover the surround next to the separation with landscaping. Maybe that's what they're doing? Soooo....that's what we've got. Like I said, you can see they're white is a grey'ed white because of the contrast with the white trim on the house. And I do not know if they're using shutters or not. I'm kind of thinking not since the windows are close. If they do use shutters, they'll be close. But then again, I was wrong about the brick on the bottom! Ha! Comments (8)Well...be very cautious and careful about too many exterior materials. It's often true that, "less is more", rather than having a half dozen different materials, colors and textures. Your second photo is a fine example of "too much is too much"! Since stone comes in much smaller range of colors than paint, I'd start with picking the stone first, and matching the rest of the house to that. FWIW, mixing stained items (beams, doors, etc.) with painted items (walls, window and door trim, etc), often starts a competition between these items as to which is dominant and more important. The results are not often good, IMO. Much better to stick with paint for everything, and avoid the battles for contrast and attention. You last photo is a very appealing and timeless approach to an exterior which is very complex; many different forms, shapes an planes. An overall, unifying and harmonious approach is always best. Good luck on your project....See MoreAnother Boring-Blah Exterior! Paint/Color Suggestions?
Comments (6)Beanie, thanks for the suggestions... however, the house photo you uploaded looks very much like what I've got... Does not appeal to me. not looking for one shade darker/lighter for shutters/trim. I have uploaded a photo from the front door to illustrate the "shrubs that need trimming" are a Japanese maple and cedar tree, neither or which are next to the house, but because of the lot angle from street, these trees partially block house. While I would consider the potentially cutting down the cedar, I'm not considering taking out the Japanese maple... it is beautiful. DecoEnthusiast... I'd never considered concrete window trim; this appears to be an expensive proposition... Do you have any examples of this on a red brick house? Also, love the bluestone/slate idea on the steps! Any thoughts on lime-wash/white-wash or German Shmear on this house??? I think that would look pretty given the deep red of the brick... Thanks all for weighing in!...See MoreAny suggestions for a house new color?
Comments (26)Hi everyone! So I wanted to come back here and post an update of our house. So we got it painted last May and we chose elephant ear for the siding, white trims and Oceanside for the front door, all of the colors are Sherwin Williams. I also removed the big bush we had in front of the house next to the drive way. :D we are very happy with the new colors!...See Moremmmnnn99
