Help! Installing backsplash in crooked house :(
Comments (12)Oh! Could you do a row of tiles vertically set so interrupt the horizontal line? The eye would notice that first, vs. following the grout along the wall. Oh, now that is a really good idea. Many brick structures deploy a course of bricks set vertically for decorative or delineative effect. Sometimes this is done to make up for an odd-sized space, like (ta-da!) under a window. You can do the same thing with brick-shaped tiles. On a 30" span, there will be 15 two-inch-wide vertical tiles. Each one will have to be only 1/30" (about the thickness of 10 sheets of paper) shorter than the next one to cover that discrepancy....See MorePlease help with backsplash dilemma
Comments (16)In this particular situation, I would prefer that the counter end flush with the cabinet - as it is, either the top of the backsplash sticks out, or the or the bottom of the backsplash is recessed. I don't love either of those options, but if I had to choose, I would prefer it as it is now - recessed on the counter. If it were me, I would try and get that counter section sized so that it was flush, and then there would be no issue with where the tile ends. In any event, remove those vertical pieces - that looks odd. A Schluter edge would look fine there....See MoreAcceptable amount of caulk under door frame
Comments (15)This caulk is the least of my worries. This is a remodel from hell. Context of other botched jobs: https://www.gardenweb.com/discussions/5558355/switching-from-load-bearing-wall-to-beam https://www.gardenweb.com/discussions/5565079/crooked-backsplash Contractor is now requesting payment before he remedies any of his other work: for plumbing work that was done (but has to be redone because the master bath is getting torn out and redone) for backsplash tile work (which also has to be fixed now that the kitchen was remeasured and new cabinets need to be rehung). Will start a new thread for that situation ^^...See MoreHelp - Kitchen backsplash crooked
Comments (24)Generally when you hire someone to do a job, like tile, they don’t critique the tile you have. I can’t imagine that it would go over very well with most homeowners to have unsolicited advice over any of their choices from a tradesman. I would assume that anyone buying has done their due diligence and knows the pros/cons to that specific tile, because they all have them. Some may be harder to lay, some may be more delicate to cut, etc. Having said that, I think that the grout will magnify the uneven spacing. While mosaic isn’t my personal choice, you did choose it, and you obviously like it. So, you can decide if you want him to redo it, laying by hand, or go with removing and installing a different tile altogether. Regardless, I think the expense for either option is on you....See MoreSabrina Armer
