Painting over pre-painted trim

Even though I told my contractor I was going to paint crown molding to match the Dover White Barker wall cabinets he hung, he bought and installed white pre-painted crown. “White is white,” says contractor. “No,” said I. Of course it does not match. According to Sherwin Williams the pre-painted finish needs to be sanded off, as I expected they would say. Has anyone had good results using a liquid sander to knock off the finish for adequate paint adhesion? I’d prefer NOT to get this guy back.
