Miele W1 - pls explain about hot/cold inlets

I am struggling between the Bosch washer and the Miele W1 (don‘t need a new dryer, just washer). I already have the 240v wiring/outlet, and am leaning toward the Bosch for that reason alone, but I like the Miele for all its features, and have other Miele products that have been great. In trying to figure out this choice, I’ve read threads on a bunch of forums.

This comment I pasted below from a recent thread about the Miele washers confused me. Can someone please tell me if it’s even correct, and if I need to be concerned about it?

“...regarding the different Miele models, the popular models have cold only inlets – they heat the water using a heat pump, whereas if you have an efficient hot water system, you may be better off getting a Miele model that takes both hot and cold inlets – these don't allow for a temperature controlled wash.”

Which one doesn’t allow for a temperature-controlled wash? What does that mean? Which Miele washer models have cold-only inlets? Thanks for the expert help from this forum!

I have a 220V Miele that is 15 years old and still working ok. When I replace I will probably get the W1. I think he W1 will heat to 170F, and it has all of the temperatures I have except 190F. The only thing will be that it will take a bit longer to heat to 170F than my 220V washer which can do a 190F wash in 56 minutes. I don't even regularly do a 190F. So the thing is that it will take a little longer to reach the desired temperature.

There is a 120V outlet right next to my 220V outlet, but it is old, so when the time comes for the W1 type of machine I will ask an electrician to install a new box for it. I figure that a new box will cost less than a Little Giant. Also I think the W1 might have a slightly larger tub than the little - not sure but I think I heard that.

The user manuals for the W1 washers should be available for download on the MieleUSA.com web site.

I have not heard of a Miele washer using a heat pump mechanism to heat the water. I believe they still use an electrical heating element to do this.

Most of your questions are answered in the owner's manual. To run off a cold water supply, you'll need a Y adapter, like this one, with standard (preferably braided burst-resistant) washing machine hoses attached from the Y adapter to the two inlets on the washer. Alternatively, you can get a Y adapter with short hoses already attached, though I'd like it better if they included burst-resistant hoses. There may be some that do, I haven't checked. Cold water prevents some types of stains from "setting" that may become permanent if immediately doused with hot water. But cold water doesn't clean very well, and some other types of stains will only come loose in warm or hot water, including stubborn shirt-collar discoloring. So the best way to make sure anything gets as clean and stain-free as possible is to fill the washer with cold water and detergent, and heat up the water as it washes to a relatively high temperature. 240v front-load washers are uniquely well suited for this, as they use only a small amount of water at a time, and have 2500-watt internal heaters that quickly bring cold water to high temperatures. And Miele made it very easy to know what temperature that is - no vague "warm" or "hot" labelling, much less "work clothes" or "bedding and blankets" or other descriptions that don't leave a clue as to what the machine will do with your clothes. On your Meile, set the dial to "120F" and your clothes will be washed at said temperature. Want something else? The dial adjusts from 85F to an on-the-verge-of-boiling 205F. And thanks to that 240v internal heater, it will reach your selected temperature quickly. Starting with cold water rather than mixed hot/cold will slow things down only slightly, maybe a few minutes. On 120v/15a washers with internal heaters, heating water is *slow* since there's only about 1000 watts allocated to the water heater. But with 240v/15a power, about 2500 watts are available for heating, which means it warms up fast and doesn't add much time if the water starts cold instead of lukewarm, as it would with a 120v washer. Your electrician is confused because the big NEMA 14-30P plugs and matching 14-30R recepticles are normally used with 208 or 240V/30 amp equipment, but the Miele washer and dryer, though equipped with "30 amp" plugs, each only draw less than 15 amps and are designed to be protected by a 240v/15a circuit breaker, not 240/30a. Show your electriction p.37 in the manual for a more detailed explanation. Note also the electrical requirements shown on placard on the machine itself, either the inner door frame or back panel near where the water and electrical connections are made. So yes, despite the 30A plug, both Miele machines are 240 volt/15 amp devices and each machine should be connected to a 240 volt/15 amp circuit with a 15 amp circuit breaker protecting it. There's no need for the Miele adapter box if you have room for two double-pole 15A breakers (the kind that take up two adjacent slots) in your electrical panel. I have a Miele W1926 which is a larger version of the 1918 (about 4" deeper inside and out) with the same requirements. It's a great machine. I can't help much with the dryer issues as I've never had a Miele dryer.

Okay really stupid question here... I just bought some very nice Matouk Milagro bath towels and the care instructions say to wash on "Gentle cycle". Would anyone hazard a guess what the equivalent cycle would be on our Miele W48XX machines? Delicates has a very infrequent tumble, as does Woolens and Handwash. I use Wrinkle-Free for most of my everyday loads. I want to make sure I follow the care label on these expensive items. Any ideas?

No fail safe that would need to be reset kicks in for that, it just shuts down. It resets after you open the door. I had a big comforter drying one time that restricted the air flow and caused this to happen. So I tried it, and I closed the cold water inlet to the washer. Below are the emails I received shortly after the faults occurred. This morning Miele contacted me to see if I needed further assistance correcting these issues. How is cool is that? Yes. If you haven't already figured this out, there are numbers of how-to-do-it posts here starting with the "Featured Answer" at the top of this thread. Because Houzz displays only part of the Featured Answer, you want to click on the faint "read more" line to get Houzz to display the rest of that detailed post by Luna123456. Also, there are something like 1.1k additional posts in this thread, most of which are not initially displayed. On my computer, I have to display all the posts before I can do a full search of the thread. Houzz makes you look below the "Featured Answer" to find the fine print which currently reads "see 1037 more comments." You may have to click a "See more comments" several times to get Houzz to display all of the posts. Then you can do a terms search (CTRL-F calls up a search box on MS Windows computers.) That will get you the posts with recommendations on specific brands of detergents and oxy liquids to use with DIY refilling.

I think you've got the washer confused with the dryer. The T1 dryer uses a heat pump, as well as a 120V receptacle. The W1 absolutely has hot and cold hookups. The washer has a heater, but not a heat pump, and it also only requires a 120V. Good luck.

Thanks everyone. I had copied that from a thread that I thought was just about the Miele washers. And since it mentioned hot and cold inlets, it seemed to be referring to the washers, not the dryers. I guess that person’s comment about the heat pump didn’t belong there!

Separate question - if I choose the Miele W1, I am concerned it’s not using the 240v of my previous Miele. I will need to get an adapter to convert the 240v to 120v. Does the 120v impact the washer’s performance, or am I overthinking this?

Correct! You are overthinking this ;-)

They provide an adaptor. i think it's like $30. I've seen some threads where people debate the hot water 240/120 issue with great--erm--enthusiasm. Unless you have some extraordinary needs, I suspect the W1 will serve you quite well. I had about a thousand doubts before committing to these machines, and they've all since floated away with every load of laundry. Hopefully, you have someone local who can sell, install, and service the machine?

@Scottie mom - yes, I live in a large metropolitan area which has both a dedicated Miele showroom as well as several authorized Miele retailers.

I am just disappointed that I have to give up my 240v Miele washer (it’s old and has issues that cannot be repaired, but I love it), in exchange for the 120v model. I cannot afford the $3800 Little Giant.

Ah. I see. Well, from what I’ve heard, the W1 is a worthy competitor. I’ve never had any Miele before and now I understand the affection people like you have for the machines. I’m not sure what the disadvantage is to the 120v. In theory, I get it, but maybe it’s not such an issue.

I’d be interested to know if your local dealer has heard anything. Mine hadn’t heard anything much about the W1/T1, but I live in a small town and they are also pretty new to the US market. My dealer did say there was a LOT of enthusiastic interest from people who knew about the machines before they were even available! I decided to roll the dice and be a guinea pig. So far so good! Hope you get it sorted soon. The Little Giant does sound amazing, and makes the W1 seem downright reasonable in comparison ;-)

The Miele WWH860WCS, WWF060WCS, WWH660WCS compact washers (and Miele TWI180WP TWF160WP compact dryers) were highly rated by Consumer Reports. Note that all washers and both dryers were expected to perform the same so you can buy the least expensive of each type (or buy by features) and obtain the same performance.

The washers and dryers run on 120 volts but you can buy an adapter to convert a 240v outlet to two 120 volt outlets. Note: the adapter only works for four-wire 240v outlets. If your 240v outlet is three-wire, you will have to update the circuit or use separate 120 volt outlets.

Wow, that's incredible Jerrod! I will say that the capacity is far larger than I expected. I've put an entire QS sheet set with duvet cover, no problem, and I have some heavy linen bedlinens that it handles with ease . I hope my W1 will last 15 years too :-)

Lawrence Sprowls - I am returning to this thread with a follow-up question to your advice above. How do I know if my outlet is 3-wire or 4-wire? The outlet has 4 prongs. Here are some photos of my 240v 30A outlet if that helps:
