Need help kitchen layout
Comments (2)You normally need at least 3' (often 3 1/2') to pass on each side of the island. So, if you have 8' between fridge and range walls...you could have an island up to 2' across. Many people decide to use a movable work table instead, since it often gets too cramped during parties and you can move the table, when necessary. It's also nice if the table/island has a different surface, such as butcher block, granite or marble...depending on how you plan to use the space. Is it for cutting veggies, rolling out pastries, setting hot pans? All this should be considered, as well as how you will use the space by the window. If you used an island (rather than peninsula) would there be room for a small table and/or banquette/window seat, under the window? Or would the peninsula seating work better? Hope this helps. Best of luck with the project! :)...See Moreneed help! kitchen layout...pics.
Comments (13)For the cook and ease of cooking, I prefer layout #1. It gives you more room around the stove for prep work and cooking. I just think that having more counter space around the stove will be more useful than counter space past the DW. Most of your prep work will be done between sink and stove and perhaps some on the island. Having the fridge as in layout 1, allows someone to be using the fridge and helping you with prep work by working on the island. If you put the fridge right next to the stove and someone wants in the fridge to help you, they will either have to walk around the island to get to it or walk behind you (i.e. get in your way) while you are prepping, cooking, baking etc. I also think that the size and symmetry of the cabinets work better in layout #1. Oh and by the way - DRAWERS, drawers, drawers....See MoreNeed help with kitchen layout (open concept)
Comments (11)Although kitchen desks aren't as popular as they were a few years ago, only you know your family's habits and needs, so if a desk makes sense in your kitchen, then keep it. However, you can also have a drop zone/command center without it looking so much like a traditional desk. As for the revised layout, I wouldn't put a stool on the short side of the island, across from the fridge. The open fridge door will be in conflict with the person sitting there, and that will also congest traffic from the entry. I'd put the seat on the other end, and move the wine cooler to the bar counter, even if you would need to add a little bump-out to the counter (if the bar counter/cabinetry is shallower than standard). If you put the trash pull-out on the corner of the island it will be convenient to both the prep/cooking zones, and the fridge/snack zones. Another option for the MW would be beside the fridge in an upper cabinet, to create a snack/coffee center, then the separate steam oven could go above the dish storage at the end of the long perimeter counter (since you didn't include a prep sink--but more on that in the next paragraph). You have small children now, but as they grow they will be helping in the kitchen and taking care of their own needs (we hope). Having a second sink will be helpful for extra prep, hand washing, snack prep, etc., so now is the time to consider the efficiency and convenience of a second sink. Comments (5)Points in order of priority to me (a home owner, not a designer): The sink and the cooktop are back to back making for choke points and risks of the person at the cooktop tripping over the open dishwasher. In the printed plan with the (presumed) fridge and freezer at the island, any time someone is raiding the fridge you have a choke point. It looks like you have no exterior walls on your kitchen. Getting good ventilation for your cooktop will be an important consideration, which is a challenge on an island because many homeowners don't want a big hood on their island. Also you have the concern about safety with the cooktop in the island and people seated across from it. I would love to have the cabinetry continue on to the table area, it provides extra storage and could act as a buffet. What about putting the microwave down by your snack station and getting the kitchen raiders out of your workspace?...See MoreNala 123
