I would like to have two "comfortable" chairs in this room. DH and I hang out here regularly and often watch the tiny TV (we have a bigger one in our family room). When we have another couple over to visit I pull in one of the dining room arm chairs which is fine - comfortable for one of us - but I'd rather have two "regular" chairs. The first photos below are our stuff - the second set are how the house was staged when we bought it. I've tried different arrangements but I think I need to do something like the staged photos to fit two chairs along with the sofa and have it all facing the window with the view. And bad as it may be decor-wise, we want the little TV in front of the window so we see the view and the TV when we're looking in that direction. We also don't want chairs over there blocking the view. The blinds that are closed are always closed so no need to look out that side.
So do you think the staged layout is what I need to do? My sofa is longer but might still work. And if so can I have two similar but unmatched chairs rather than two that match as in those photos? I'd like to keep my wicker chair in there and get a second relatively small chair as it's a small room. I see one exactly like the staging chairs on CL right now but maybe too different from my chair. The coffee table will go - it was a "temporary" CL solution when I moved in. I have a smaller round wicker table that I could use instead. I'd like to keep the bench but end tables are flexible though we need lamps and surface area for beverages, books, devices, etc. and the coffee table serves as an ottoman.

Comments (37)I love your home and your style. I agree with @tibbrix that you should avoid layering a rug over your current carpeting. Our house was carpeted when we first moved in, and I was determined to use all our Persian rugs etc - but it just didn't work (either visually or functionally.) I also agree with all the advice to place or mount the TV on the brick - it looks squished in the corner and the brick seems like the right spot. Since you're open to buying new furniture and since you have a great room with a big sectional, I'd consider trying something that is explicitly differentiated from your current living room. Maybe skip the sofa for a some big comfy easy chairs (or swivel chairs) with a round coffee table in the center? Comments (23)I copied the photo of your rug to my photo program and sampled the colors in it. I then compared those colors with paint colors from Benjamin Moore and Sherwin-Williams. The light gold of the background most closely matches SW 6374 Torchlight. The light brown was similar to BM's 2166-20 Caramel Latte. The green matched SW 7729 Edamame, and SW 2806 Rookwood Brown is similar to a taupe in the rug. Neither the coral or the dark red have any matches, and they would overwhelm a room in any event. What looked blue in the rug sampled as gray. These colors in your rug are muted by the small areas they occupy. They are more saturated when viewed by themselves. Below are approximate samples of the above colors. You should first of all check out these colors on the manufacturer's website in their virtual paint. Here is Benjamin Moore and here is Sherwin-Williams. Remember that you can choose a lighter version of these colors. For instance, SW 7726 Lemon Verbena is a lighter version of Edamame, and SW 6373 Harvester is a lighter version of Torchlight. Once you have narrowed the choices you should buy samples and paint on poster board. You can then set the poster boards against the walls you want to paint to see how the colors work. Comments (8)I don't think you can go wrong with narrow builtins around the fireplace, under the windows. The space can't really be used in another way, and having storage is always a plus. Think carefully about whether you want closed or open storage, or a combination. I also think the soft green you had on your accent wall would look great in your new dining space. Greens always look good with wood. If the dining area has a lot of windows, you could use a deeper color. I'd keep the rest of the main spaces one neutral color. You can use the third option from your builder for a different bedroom color, which I think is always nice. I'd make a floorpan with actual dimensions, and measure all your large current furniture pieces. That will help you see whether or not they can fit in the spaces, or if you should sell them prior to the move. I wouldn't buy anything until after you're in. Comments (17)To strive for balance, with your off center window, I would want a larger volume piece on the left wall. First, realize that a rug under the table should be 36-42" larger than t he table top to allow for chair scoot/sit space. It should also not run into baseboards or furniture positioned against the walls. You probably don't want it to extend outside the footprint of the dining area as limited by the end of the wall on the right. 5 years agoWe’re testing this arrangement for now and like the TV in the corner. At the moment I’m thinking two small matching chairs opposite sofa with a small table between and something in the corner for the TV. Maybe a smaller coffee table/ottoman depending on size of chairs.

5 years agoI like these little swivel chairs - they would be custom order so not these colors. They're about 5" wider and deeper but 3" shorter than the chair I have in the room now. I think they would fit with a smaller coffee table/ottoman and a small table between them. Which do you prefer?

I was actually looking for a chair to show to you that is like the one in my den. it is a teal blue leather swivel, on the smallish side and we adore it. It's so comfy. If you want I can check if it has a label.

5 years agoFinal update: DH reminded me we had a glider in a storage closet downstairs. Had been in the living room at our last house but I never found a spot for it over the last three years. He hauled it up, helped me move things a bit and VOILA - two chairs. I’m sure it looks like an oddball mix to the decorating savvy but I’m okay with odd and eclectic (and free).
