Need track/pendant lighting over large island, suggestions? PICS
Comments (2)I think you are referring to monorail lighting. It definitely has a more modern vibe and is not for everyone. The reason I think what you have now does not work well is that the shades are very small/narrow and you probably have lower watt bulbs in them. It looks like you have recessed lighting as well. Is that not working for you as far as lighting the sink/prep side? I can't quite tell, but the spacing may be too far apart for the size--plus it looks like you have tall ceilings and all this has an impact. Do they cast a shadow when someone is working on the prep side? What I'd do is make a scaled drawing of your kitchen with the light fixtures and wattages and take it to a good quality lighting store that helps with lighting design and see what they recommended since you already spent money on one solution that is not working. When we remodeled our kitchen the place I ordered my lighting from did our lighting design. In many cases, their recommendations differed than my electrician's and most cases I went with their recommendations and am very happy that I did. The kitchen forum is another source you can solicit feedback for your lighting problem. I'd love to see something like this in there Here is a link that might be useful: Schoolhouse pendants...See More1 Pendant Light or 3 Pendant Lights from Ceiling
Comments (18)For the uplight, you could go a few routes, especially with respect to dimming functionality. And some fixtures don't support dimming, so you need to figure that out. To that end, I suggest you think through the use cases. For example, the use case that I think I'd appreciate most is late evening, after you've retired to another room of the house, at which time a mellow indirect glow from the skylight cutout would be particularly pleasant. You might also want the more light from this source on occasion, in which case you'd want brighter lights on a dimmer. That being said, here's some options. I'm thinking two, centered on the skylights, mounted near the bottom rim of the cutout (just above the beam probably). Regarding the pendant, I know that selecting pendants is hard enough without more to think about, but one downside of a single pendant vs multiple pendants is thhat single sources create worse shadows. And the clear glass pendants above exacerbate this harsh shadow problem by being point sources, whereas the Fillsta, for example, mitigates this problem because it's effectively a uniform 31" sphere of light. This large diffuser also makes it possible to use a brighter source. For example, you could put a 300W equivalent CFL in the Fillsta, but such a bright light would be unacceptably harsh in a point source like the clear glass pendants above....See MoreLooking for backsplash and pendant lighting suggestions!
Comments (11)I think you're right to shy away from stark white. or any white for that matter. this is no white anywhere in that kitchen. I wouldn't do a white subway tile of any kind. (at the bottom I posted a very creamy glazed brick tile that could work, but you'd have to get some samples. ) just to show you how ugly it is to tile on top of the back piece, and with these 2x4 white tiles, ugh. Baltic brown has the darker earthier tones. you could try basalt tiles (home depot carries them) or even black slate or maybe one like this w/the dark grout. this is a ceramic tile. (Tilebar) love the black outlets too. install under cabinet lighting if you don't have it already. coupled w/your wood cabs, this would be a striking combo black zellige tiles in the 4x4 Cloe has the 4x4 (I think lowes carries the Cloe line shown here in the subway tile) you could also do an Ivory travertine (as long it's it's the nice creamy white and not the pink tone) the color looks like this. they have it in subway tiles too this is probably the number one backsplash tile w/Baltic Brown. it's difficult to find any other type of tile used w/this granite Tilebar.com has many tiles in your color range. you get 5 samples for $5. This is Nabi Sea Wind Diff granite, but same coloring, more or less. basalt, black slate, Navi, and some sand color tiles. want a coppery glass tile? Horizons by Dal Tile in Driftwood Glazed brick from Cle'Tile The bottom one is Parchment. more of a creamier tone that might work w/your stone. if you want a white color, choose an ivory or very creamy white if you go w/the darker black tiles (which I think is a winner w/your wood cabs) paint the surrounding walls a creamy white...See MoreNeed help choosing pendant lights for island
