Repairing split wood on an antique wardrobe?
Comments (5)Pipe clamps are fine -- but for smaller lengths -- the "pistol-style ' bar clamps will probably be fine as well .You probably will want to open up the split a little more than it just lays to get more glue on the bare wood on the inside surface of the split.. Keep pushung more in with your finger tips -- so much till it oozes out the back side -- then use your clamps -- either kind -- but like Linda said -- not too much pressure -- The too much pressure is all too easy to do with pipe claps -- especially 3/4 inch size. If possipbe clamp it so you can see the whole split after clamping so that you can wipe the excess glue oozing out -- crpenters wood glue WILL NOT adhere very well to "finished or oiled surfaces -- but it is still easier to get it off before it hardens. Do not clean with too wet of a rag. Come back after an hour or so to get any that is late in coming out -- do not move your clamps for at least 24 hours-- or you will not have good bonding. Good luck...See MoreCan this antique hutch be painted "farmhouse" style
Comments (25)Thanks so much for all the great ideas and opinions. Here is a little more info. It's actually all one piece and not a top and bottom and there were never doors on it. There is a label somewhere that says "True Grand Rapids-Cabinet Making Certified" although they advertised it as being in excellent condition it's definitely not. I like the examples that were posted and my family room has a side table and coffee table that are distressed off white (Broyhill Attic Heirloom series) but the wall behind it will be a tan color when the drywall is finished in a week or two, the floor it will sit on will be honey oak and the chairs around the table are black. My table actually matches the color of the piece now but I always have a table cloth on it these days (I've got 4 kids). I've kicked around the idea of going barn red but either black, off white, or red, I'm just not sure the formal piece will look right going rustic although some of the examples above have that same formal look and they painted up very nice. I'll try to post pictures of the surroundings tomorrow. Thanks again for the ideas and opinions....See MoreNew Kitchen Pics and Black Hutch
Comments (3)Thank you. That shelf is made from a beam out of an old home that was destroyed during Katrina. My DH and I salvaged it out of the huge trash piles that we passed on the beach after the storm. So it holds some bittersweet memories for us. frenchkitty...See MoreOpinions on CL hutch for foyer
Comments (11)Thanks so much for all of the great advice. I was questioning the age of the piece also, based on the lack of wear and tear. My pine baking table is almost falling apart and has several stains and wormholes, which makes sense since it's such an old piece. I have no problem with a reproduction, since I'd prefer it to be sturdy, but don't want to pay almost $1000 on CL for a piece that wouldn't cost much more from a retailer. My foyer is large so it would accommodate a large hutch, but I'd like to find a piece that doesn't scream "dining room!" I can understand the comments advising that this particular hutch may not be suited for a foyer. I'm really at a loss trying to decorate this room! I'm not sure why my pics are showing up. They were at first, but I'm having issues with my Snapfish account. Thanks again!...See Morecolleenoz
