Thinking about buying lake house...ugly front...help me for cheap
Comments (26)I would whitewash the brick. You should only have to do it once in your lifetime if it's done right, and it gives style and character to even the most uninspiring builders' bricks. Google "whitewash brick" and look at the images, and then click on askthebuilder for more information. Then I would get rid of the shutters, paint the trim and door a nice soft but rich watery blue or green, like one of the variety of traditional trim colors of Cape Cod shingle cottages. I'd hang deep window boxes in the same blue or green under the windows, and build planter boxes, same color as the boxes, along the perimeter of the terrace. I'd paint the gable end and the columns the same tone as the whitewash. The gable design is more problematic, since it is not centered on the door, and if you add more columns, you need to be sure that they aren't too close together, which can make it hard to get things in and out. The biggest design challenge I see is that the gable end needs an architrave...a horizontal base to the siding...and the columns need to be fatter, correctly tapered, have the proper bases and capitals, and moved in from the edges by a foot or so. Then I'd get on with the pleasure of what looks like a charming getaway!...See MoreHelp me find a large, cheap, outdoor rug
Comments (10)Thanks for the replies. I see that the link for the first rug didn't work. It's my favorite of the 3. 1st rug - trying again I looked at Home Depot over the weekend but didn't find anything suitable. I don't have a Lowe's nearby but will check online. I checked Overstock but didn't think to check Joss & Main or Amazon. I would be happy with a 12' by 15' rug. It will be in my sun room, and I am not sure what else will be in there. I have a sofa and a round dining table in there now. I just tossed out the love seat that was in there, and am thinking about replacing it with a couple of chairs. The sofa will go eventually, too. The floor is concrete and currently has wall to wall carpet. I plan to rip the carpet and pad out this weekend and I am not sure what I am going to do for flooring long term, but a large outdoor carpet would cover it for now. Long term, I am debating between everything from just painting the concrete, to staining it, to tiling it, to laminate or vinyl plank. I am concerned about laminate or vinyl scratching when my cats inevitably get litter stuck to their paw pads and drag it across the room....See MoreIndulge me and help with project on the cheap
Comments (44)lisa & tartan, our first long weekend of the "summer" season starts on May 17. I am hoping that the kitchen is finished enough for a biiiiigggg batch of margarita making (summer is in quotes b/c it is not unheard of to get snow here on that weekend :-0) penny, I'm so glad to hear it was successful for you. It already looks totally different to me with just the little bit he's done so far. The pic is taken from the living room facing the kitchen. justerrilyn, that first stencil pic is totally my style, but I think the 2nd suits the MCM roots of the cottage. I really need everything in place b/f I can commit to colours or any accessories, so you may be right about the fridge staying white. All the white cabs will have to be repainted, so doing them to match fridge wouldn't be hard. I'd also pictured the walls white, but from the pics with the white drywall that he sent today, I'm questioning that - it is really bright after being used to all that dark panelling....See MoreHelp finding cohesive colors for new home
Comments (12)The stone is gray and gray is neutral. If you like it, don't paint it. Gray stone could go in a variety of design schemes: Coastal- rocks on the coastline; Rustic Mountain or Lakehouse; Zen gray neutral/ minimalism-natural stone; Euro Cottage -traditional & quaint- stone chimney/ hearth; Tropical.... Take a look at the link to the model homes-get your ideas in mind FIRST and then shop within that mindset. This link shows over 50 model homes of various transitional style color schemes https://tours.stevenjamescollins.com IMHO, Homegoods is good for when you are shopping for accents with a color plan in mind, not so great to get ideas as you might be tempted for every trend they sell. . Z Gallerie has a wide selection of wall art. Their pillows, are pricey, but with a little Internet search, you can find the same fabric and make your own. Perhaps my Kirkland's had a narrow stock supply, but I found their wall art limited. However, do shop in the clearance section for framed pieces. I found 4 (26x32 inch) framed wall art pieces that had driftwood wood frames in the clearance section for $20each. Frames of that size would be well over $100.. I removed Kirkland'sbrown board backing and the image inside and replaced them with giclee prints that I ordered on-line. I used a staple gun to close the back of the frame. The hardest part was using pliers to remove the Kirkland's staples that secured the backing.. The prints I chose were selling at Ethan Allen store for $300 each!!...See MoreDiana Bier Interiors, LLC
