Comments (13)I had porcelain tile installed 12 years ago under my cabinets in a remodel. The GC said it would be easier for them to get the cabinets level that way. Apparently, they installed them, but did not prepare the surface correctly. Over the years my beautiful porcelain tiles began to crack. I thought it was from me dropping things on the tile. When I had someone come out to look at it recently to fix it, they said the tile was loose and was not installed correctly. It cost me a fortune to have them cut out last month around the base of the cabinets and replaced. They had to use a diamond saw to cut all around the cabinets then had to install an extra bit of trim around the base to hide where the old porcelain went under the tile. Moral of the story: If you EVER want to change your tile for any reason when you tile under the cabinets, it will cost you a fortune. Hopefully, your tile people will do a good job installing the tile in the first place so it won't start cracking on you too....See MoreWhat goes in first - floor or cabinet?
Comments (37)Either way you go: Buy extra tile. Buy extra tile. Buy extra tile. At least one full box if you can. Even if you run it under the cabinets, tile can gouge, it only takes one drop of a heavy pot. I honestly can't say it enough. The previous owners of our house laid tile to sell. They put the same tile in the kitchen, powder room and laundry room. It's a pretty decent, neutral tile, but they only left 6 tiles. Yup. That's it. We're changing the cabinet layout and obviously the tile did not run under the cabinets. The tile has now been discontinued and 6 tiles wasn't enough to work with so after only 3 years we're having to rip it out. I hope nothing major happens in the other two rooms....See MoreWhat comes first, the wood floor or interior door
Comments (14)"Hard"wood floors dent easily compared to truly hard floors like ceramic tiles. I installed the wood floors first because I wanted a perfect transition from floor to door frame (without caulk). Further construction caused a few scratches in the wood floors so installing the wood floors last would have avoided that. But then, even when our cats accelerate with their claws extended to gain traction (futile on a wood floor but hilarious), they scratch up the floor. That's just what happens to wood floors I guess. I would install the doors first, if you have a smooth wood floor and want the no scratch look last until your house warming party when at least one guest will have shoes that ding your floor. This will require your contractors to be super careful. I would install the doors last, if you have hand-scraped, pre-dented and pre-scratched floors. That way at least you avoid the caulk look at the bottom of your door frames....See MoreSteps for Kitchen Remodeling ? What comes first usually ?
Comments (16)Practically in tears and ready to run down the street screaming. Electrician seems ancient and fairly clueless. An upstairs outlet went partially bad (sudden low voltage/no power in half) after he left the other day. He is back today and seems disinterested in this issue. Drywall people still aren't here. They were supposed to arrive 2 hours ago. Worst of all the project manager has not been reachable since Monday. Won't return phone calls. Or emails. And to top it off, undarling husband refuses to be upset about anything EXCEPT being very mad at me for not being super chill about everything. I used to flip places and know the vagaries of dealing with contractors and subs and how you need to keep abreast of everything. Meanwhile, dh's Mom bought him this house a decade ago. Because he knows nothing he thinks everything is going well....See Morefifamom
