I would not use a white marble for a shower floor. bad enough that you have marble on the walls. what are you going to use for cleaning?

use a porcelain for your floors. at least on the floor you'll be able to use a good quality cleaner to keep your grout/tile clean. for the walls, you'll have to use a marble cleaner ONLY.

I'd go with a 3" hex in a gray porcelain for your shower floor. or if you want it light, do a white or very light gray porcelain.

Yes - you need to be concerned with waterproofing - Natural Marble is porous - and needs to be sealed for sure!!! or Porcelain is a better option so you can take this off your "worry" list. And YES - simplify the palette. It the shower walls are patterned (and this includes "veining" lines) then the floor should be a solid matching white of contrasting gray. Best of Luck.

I'm no designer, but the way the veins are running in all different directions would drive me crazy.

Walls are busy. Keep the floor super simple and grout lines minimal as they are a bitch to clean.

While you are reading up on waterproofing and why it is imprortant, you may want to peruse the Durock installation instructions as it does not appear that is correct either, not enough fasteners and the joints are not taped.........................

That whole shower is a mess , there is no proper waterproofing that I can see BTW cement board is not waterproof. Whoever did the tiling is not a pro and you should know that a tiny sample is not good enough to choose from. I would not go with another marble and since this needs to be ripped out anyway go with a simpler one for both and marble is never my choice for shower walls a nice simple 12 x 24 porcelain tile for both shower walls and bathroom floor will make it simpler.

People talking about waterproofing that have never tiled anything. By almost every code in every state a simple plastic sheet or roofing felt behind cement board is sufficient and in some cases preferred. People hear a little information and just keep repeating it. Roll on and membrane systems were developed for high rise and steam showers set ups. Sometimes depending on the tile material allowing the wall to breathe is actually better.

Not to say there isn't plenty wrong here. First off that size marble is a disaster for everyday shower use. It should be a mud job those are very heavy panels. The seams should be taped. I get the edges overlap the wet area and will be covered by a door but that is where there is a waterproofing issue.

Membrane waterproofing systems are made to go over sheetrock which was the problem to begin with. In the 90's green board was touted as being waterproof which of course it wasn't. That is the entire reason for all these bathroom failures. Cement board isn't waterproof but it also will not fail if wet so you can let it get wet all day long and nothing will happen. In STANDARD shower set up in a house simple is better. Membrane set ups are not easy to use. Mfg's don't make the required thin sets to install and a lot of mixing and matching is used. Remember all those green board showers looked great till 15-20years later when they were ripped out and everybody saw all the mold and crumbling sheetrock.

STOP YELLING WATERPROOFING AND READ THE PRODUCTS ACTUAL TECH SHEETS. NOWHERE ON CEMENT BOARD DOES IT SAY YOU NEED A ROLL ON OR MEMBRANE WATERPROOFING SYSTEM. I would rather an uneducated installer use a simple system then use a system they don't know and screw it up and cause more issues than are corrected.

Do not mix two different natural stones. Why did you choose such large format tiles? Was it a design choice or a money choice?

and just to add to wanna bath,,,,Durock or cement board, even cautions against using a waterproof membrane (like Redgard) painted over it, and the plastic sheeting behind. That's a no-no. A lot of regular showers are done w/just cement board and the tar paper or plastic vapor barrier behind it,

Joints are often taped and mudded as the tile is done.

This is completely legit and code compliant. if water should somehow go all the way through the cement board, there is a barrier behind it so that it won't wet the studs and cause mold.

I love the original shower tile, it was lovely.

Are you going to try and use those huge 12x24 tiles on your floor?! That would be a huge safety concern. Read Beth’s post and go with one of those options.

Yes, I agree with my four sons (to go with Beth's suggestions) There's a lot going on already so a simple patterned floor with light or dark gray grout for wear and tear would work best.

As an aside, HOUZZ advice column seems to be overrun with construction "experts" who hijack design questions and scream the sky is falling (aka "the walls will leak" or "tear it all out").

It IS always important to make sure your contractor is licensed, insured, has good time-tested references, etc...

And a well intentioned comment on HOUZZ telling you to double check your construction can prove potentially helpful.

But being flooded with MULTIPLE shower police, tile police, construction police, etc is redundant, even reckless at times, and often counter productive.

If it makes you feel better, Just two days ago I was told by three different commenters REPEATEDLY to "tear out my shower and start over" just because they saw an EARLY-ON construction pic and deemed themselves experts on my shower with what they believed it must look like now/that my contractor was inadequate. I found myself slightly panicked and almost felt I needed to show them pics of the waterproofing, etc. But I didn't waste my time with that and instead just verified what i had already researched before we started and it all turned out to be watertight and absolutely beautiful (thus far).

Double check your construction to give yourself some peace of mind after the feeding frenzy on here, and then Beth's design advice was perfect if you stick with your design plan.
