Tis the season - for seed catalogues....
Comments (11)I just got my Johnny's catalog a week or so ago, along with a couple of other small seed companies. It seems like there should be more by now. My ritual is to spend the weekend after Christmas pulling out my seeds and going through the catalogs, even though I wind up ordering 90% from Johnny's and Nichols. I have four day weekend coming up and it's on the agenda. I save a lot of my seed, though with some things hybrids do better. I'm trying to get it down to what will do well, but still need to try a few new things every year. Latest must-haves that I order are an heirloom beet mix from Nichols, Red Giant mustard (the bugs don't bother it!) and a storage carrot called Bolero from Johnny's. Darlene, we grow tomatoes, tomatillos, peppers and eggplant in high tunnels and they always make it through the first frost. Not this year. Everything set fruit late, so we were just starting to harvest...sighhhh. Party Music, we're technically in Z5, but really it's Z4...our own little microclimate. I've had good luck with Yankee Bell peppers, Gypsy (small, thin-walled hybrid yellow bell) and Jimmy Nardello Sweet Italian Frying Peppers. They are under cover, though. Sleevendog, I am with garlic like you are with tomatoes, though I only made it to 39 varieties...am now down to 14. For tomatoes I have room for 50 and half the space goes to my reliables - Legend, Black Krim, Stupice and a few Early Girls. Half goes to experiments. I will have to try the Matt's cherry, Boo. I grew currant tomatoes a few times and they were...eh. I grow one Sweet 100 and one Sun Sugar or Sungold because they taste good and always do well. I try a couple of new heirloom or OP cherries every year. Last year I started a Seed Library at my library, so I have a place to share (get rid of) my failed experiments....See More'Tis the Season to Gain Weight
Comments (3)I've run out of window space. Wish I knew hot to set up artificial lights. I've been looking at set ups with T5 bulbs, but they only come in 5,000K. Can't find the set up with 6,500K bulbs...See MoreTis The Season
Comments (18)Alex I have a similar rack mounted above my washer and love it. Mine looks a bit flimsier but works great for scarves, lingerie and dressier clothes that can't go in the dryer. It's very handy to tuck the rack away when you are done with it. When I lived in Ontario I always line-dried cloth diapers and heavier items like floor mats and pet bedding. Bedding, towels and clothes got too stiff for me and I also couldn't handle the allergens. Now I'm in Alberta and it's way too dusty and dry to hang anything outside. I am definitely noticing more and dirtier laundry with my kids playing outside in warmer weather though, grass, dirt, pollen and sunscreen are the stains I see the most but Persil does well on all of them. The bottle of Cheer I am using up doesn't cut it for kids clothes so I save it for bedding and towels....See More“Tis the Season for Seasonality?
Comments (10)Oh those shows...... That is a ridiculous whine. They are in season SOMEWHERE. And they were likely sourced from that somewhere. The magic of modern trade. I think things like that are food snobs looking for reasons to sniff and snark. I cannot watch shows like that anymore. Can we just appreciate that they made a turkey out of a strawberry without going all righteous foodie indignation? I can. I guess the "Expert" judges cannot. So sorry I did not grow and harvest the sugarcane for this cake myself. No, I did not mill my own wheat for it either......so sorry. No, I did not climb a tree in Madagascar to get the vanilla.......sorry, I am useless and cant cook.....The eggs? No, I cannot tell you the maiden name of the chicken that laid them......and I did not churn the butter either........See MoreFlorida_Joe's_Z10a
