Anyone with black bedroom furniture, like/dislike?
Comments (17)An old client of mine did just that...her floors are wide honey pine planks, and we did a mostly blue and white scheme with creamy yellow-ivory walls, and I had all her simple mismatched wooden furniture spray-painted (my painter has a booth and a commercial spray apparatus) semi-gloss black. Her things included a simple four-poster bed, two different night stands, a dresser, and a blanket chest, and we did everything except the blanket chest, which we had painted a worn barn red-brown. We replaced the hardware with aged (not "antiqued") brass, and added an old dark natural wicker rocking chair and a big old brass kindling bucket for magazines. I'm sorry I don't have photos to share, because it looks great (if I do say so!) I would caution against flat black. It looks dull, and because the finish is a bit "toothy," it grabs and holds not only the dust, but also the lint and fibers from everything you use to dust it with. I also don't usually like to use lacquer unless you are sure you will never chip it, or get anything like oil or alcohol on it. Too fragile for simple living....See MorePainting furniture for Bedroom
Comments (4)Yes sold on CL there are several similar - it was listed for $175, but the woman who wanted it was sweet and her husband was in Iraq, so I let her have it for less ;-). My goal is a close to even exchange. I love CL! Anyway, the current finish on the furniture is almost peachy with white in the edges and distressed areas, so I want to eliminate that with the refinish, the table I did is a bit richer brown than shown but not super dark either....See MoreBedroom Pine Furniture Upcycle
Comments (11)Applying dark gel stain to the tops is not going to make any difference at all in their likeability. If you hate them, you hate them. You can paint them white which will change their appearance dramatically, but you still may hate them. The best long term solution is to move them to another room and buy something both of you really love. Giving them to relatives may also work for your husband. If you want to try dark tops, you can get some dark poster board or not-so-sticky Contact paper and cut it to fit....See Morebedroom furniture proportions
Comments (30)Traditionally, the bed is the focal point of a bedroom and that's usually achieved by making sure it's placed in the best spot in the room and having the headboard wall draw the eye. (Focal point does not necessarily mean pattern.) Feel free to skip the picture above the headboard if you find the headboard is substantial enough to command attention. (Pictures don't always convey these things accurately so you need to develop your eye to look at your room objectively and trust your taste.) A patterned duvet could also be nice but it all depends on you and the vibe you're seeking in the room. Some people tire quickly of patterns. Others love them forever. There's more than one way to achieve a pleasing bedroom and loads of options out there so being all over the place is par for the course whenever we contemplate change. At least, it is for me. (You should see my Pinterest boards for my little bedroom revamp!) My suggestion to you is to describe the room you want in a few words then decide on your starting point. Most designers will tell you that should be the bed. Figure out your budget and what's staying and you now have your change parameters. Keep your end picture (be it a feeling or a look) in mind to guide you as you choose elements. For example, let's say the vibe you're seeking is "romantic" and you fall in love with a bold geometric duvet. You'll need to ask yourself if this duvet jibes with "romantic" as you pictured it....See MoreRelated Professionals
