Help! Knotty Pine everywhere!

We live in a bardominium with LOTS of knotty pine. The walls have 4’ wainscoting, the kitchen cabinets match and the floors are a shade of orange stained concrete!! I painted the walls a muted beige/green thinking it would lighten it up. Nope. Still looks orange everywhere. I would love to paint it ALL white....but scared! Would painting the floors help? I have zero decorating sense but would love tips!

I painted all but one wall of my knotty pine paneled FR white -- BM SImply White, (which reads very white, at first I thought almost too white, so decide just how white you want to go!) I am very glad that I did, although I have liked some knotty pine in past houses -- just not 4 solid walls of it!

Would it be possible to cover the floors, or perhaps look into having them re-stained a neutral dark brown?

I think a different stain would help. Knots will always take stain a bit differently, but if you fight the nature of the wood, it will be more obvious. I think that if you picked a warmer stain, you wouldnt have as much of an issue, as the contrast of the warm wood and the cool stain emphasizes the differences in how the parts of the wood are taking the stain. I also think something warmer would work better with your fireplace and go better with Spanish style; I don't generally think of grey with Spanish.

How thick is your planking, true hardwood or a thin veneer? Priming Bare Wood (linked to article) If you are deciding to paint bare wood, you should seal all knots (spot prime) with a shellac based primer. Shellac based primers are great for sealing wood knots and sap streaks. They do carry a pungent odour, but dry very quickly and will not let the knot bleed through the top (finish) coat. If you are looking to stain your bare wood, you don’t not have to seal the knots with a primer, heavily saturating the knots with stain will do. Removing all dried up and oozing sap is a must, especially when dealing with woods such as fir or pine. After removing the sap build up, use an appropriate primer/sealer to seal in the sap affected areas.

To minimize the gloominess, adding a light floor color rather than a dark floor color would be best. Look at cork flooring and Marmoleum. Both are warm underfoot, easy to maintain, and available in light colors. Marmoleum has a huge range of colors. Both look good with Oriental rugs because they are plain, not highly patterned. Use light furniture and light curtains. Classic off -white or cream curtains would lighten up the room. Wall sconces add ambient light. Several LED track lights hidden by the beams could illuminate the fireplace and its built-ins. If the cabin is single story, consider adding Solatubes to dispel gloominess. The new models have an option to add a bright LED light bulb for use at night. Solatubes make a spectacular difference in dark rooms and hallways. Start by providing photos. No one can really give good suggestions without seeing the space you're dealing with. Take pictures of rooms you're asking about from all four walls so we can see doorways, windows, adjacent spaces. What furniture do you plan to bring? Start an Ideabook on Houzz called "knotty pine" and save those that appeal to you. Is this a vacation home or main home?

My entire house is knotty pine of the lowest grade. I painted the bathroom in sealer, then 4 coats of white but the tannins still bled through. If I ever have the courage to cover the pine I will do it with sheets of 8 x 4 faux bead-board that I can paint easily and can be taken down again if the new owners of the house choose to after I am dead.

Since you live in a barn house, the knotty pine is very fitting for your type of house. I wouldnt do anything with it. I most certainly wouldnt be painting floors. I cant even imagine the maintenance nightmare that would create. My suggestion is to enjoy your more unusual unique type house the way it is, or sell it, to get the type of house you really seem to want. We havent seen any interior pictures, but, the exterior looks to be a very nice lookng house, even though the picture is in the evening, so we cant see all of that either.

Most foolproof, and probably cheapest, thing to do would be to restain that concrete floor.

I my own self with probably use a dullish dark neutral color like a dark cocoa.
