Need help with living room pleassse!!

We were trying to go for a contemporary feel in our living having painted the walls grey. We bought red sofas. We want to paint the fireplace white. But the rug we got turned out to be too cream colored. What do y’all think we can do to make this living room look good?

My rendering. Go with gold accents if you want to leave your rug.

Center the sofa on the far wall (where the TV currently is) and put the end tables on each side. Get matching table lamps (26"-30" tall) for the end tables. You can put a larger piece of art over the sofa. This will address the immediate focal point as you enter this room. Keep the loveseat where it currently is, centered on the wall between the windows (if there's enough room when you move the sofa). Place the coffee table in front of it. If you need to scooch it down a bit that's fine, but I generally like to try centering off of architectural features first. You're looking at an arrangement something like this: You can then purchase a TV cabinet/console that will go on the wall opposite the loveseat. There might then be enough room to get a pretty side chair to angle in to the seating area. With this arrangement, you address conversation needs and also TV viewing. I wouldn't do an accent wall. Just keep all of your paint light and neutral. The carpet you have is pretty ... if you like it keep it. It looks as if you've already pulled some colors from it for your throw pillows. I would remove your valances, you don't need them with your fabric shades. Pretty furniture and a nice start to your room!

Can you still exchange the rug? Although I see the rug matches the stone at the fireplace.

I don't think you can watch a TV that is that high.

Place chests on either side of the fireplace and arrange art or mirrors above.

Working on exchanging the rug. May not be able to in which case I will have to move it to a different room. TV is moving as well. Don’t know what do in the recess on the right other than shelves

I like kinda like the cream. I think if it was bright white it might look too stark. I'd see if you'd like it better with a coffee table and go from there.

I hear that you want to make it look more contemporary. Your rug is not a problem as it goes with the stonework on the fireplace. I don't think you want white anywhere because that clashes with the red and the ivory. What I recommend is that you either strip off the mantel moulding surround and replace it with a much more plain boxy shaped mantel and pillars. Then, and even if you don't replace this trim, paint the whole thing gray so it blends in with the wall. Use a glossier finish than the walls--I recommend PPG Breakthrough Satin paint. And, if you have the room to pull the sofas in a bit more and off the window wall, it is more cozy and attractive to have a tighter conversation area around the fireplace. If you can show a wider angle, I could better advise on the furniture placement.

What do you mean about stripping the mantel ? Sorry I am not too savvy with interiors/architectures. I will get more pics. You think the cream and grey look ok together? My kitchen which is behind where I took the photo from is also dark brown with brown counter tops and its driving me crazy despite me trying so hard to change the living room to more contemporary.

The rug works with the fireplace, just stark with the solid red sofas. Add some pillows or throws with the cream color, add some artwork with the red and cream colors to tie the colors together.

I would move the TV to the nook on the right side of the fireplace rather than keeping it above the fireplace. Place it over a piece of furniture that fits the space and gives you storage below. Have it on an arm that it can go away when not in use and pull forward, angled when in use.

Agree with Vicki that the couches being too far apart and simplifying the mantle.

If you do exchange the rug look for something that has a design that incorporates the red from the sofas and the cream from the fireplace and the gray from the walls.

Please ignore the yellow chair I just left that from older couch set up. Also my husband had some wall paper that he stuc in the recess just to see how it would look.

Why not try some gold accents in here? If you are keeping the rug that is? If might work really well. Try some gold end tables, a gold chest in the corner with the TV above it, a piece of artwork over the fireplace with gold in it, some pillows with gold in it, then a coffee table with gold, etc.
