10' accent wall in open floor plan, design decor advice needed
Comments (58)@Beth H et al.. yes, and I'm really thrilled with all of the recommendations, everyone has style and it's great to see varying opinions. So I don't want to think anyone has wasted their time, I think down the road in the near future, we will go with something built out pretty much like you were suggesting early on. As we just finished the remodel within the last year, we are not up for building anything out or even tiling the wall at this point. We don't need new furniture at the moment (kids will ruin it anyway). For now, we were looking for something minor / superficial, if that's the correct verbiage. While we know now, that it may not look "perfect", it's where we're at now. That said, we don't want to do anything (now) with the fireplace, what we are open to is: some type of shelving (which would have to be shallow in depth, I think), definitely plants (faux preferably), artwork or like I mentioned (which may have gotten lost), is maybe B&W canvas print collage (I'm a part-time photographer and we have zero photos of our kids displayed). We are also open to putting a small corner piece to the left side, but it would have to be very small footprint as we only have about 12" from the wall to the lightswitch near the slider, but after hearing/seeing some of the plant options, I think we prefer that. Another note, we (I) have a floor subwoofer to the right hand side, you can see my wife's aerogarden sitting on top of it until we find a home for it :) Hopefully, that helps, again, I really do appreciate everyone weighing in and taking a lot of time for the mock ups. -Matt...See MoreNeed help with recessed lighting for open concept living room area
Comments (7)I like a lot of light as well. I think everything is well lit except for your family room. Definitely not enough light in there (especially if you want the option of a brightly lit space. There is no center lighting and everything has been arrange around the edges of the room. IMO, what you have is a HUGE span with zero lighting which is not at all adequate. Some people prefer room edge lighting and that’s what they’ll recommend. But if you like a lot of light, I don’t think the way your designer set things up will satisfy that need. If it was my home, even though the ceilings are only 8 feet, I would want a center fixture (small chandelier or semi flush)...something pretty. If you are not sure about your furniture placement they can always install the box with lots of extra wire looped in the ceiling so you can adjust it later. Just take pics of your ceiling joists when it’s all opened up (if it is opened up) so you know where everything is located. Makes it easier later. You’ll have a little sheetrock repair, but completely manageable. I would add more cans/wafers around the center of the room and put them on a dimmer. You can always turn them off or dim them if it’s too much light, but if there’s nothing there, you’re stuck with a dark room and no real way to fix it (other than having your electrician return and hack up your ceiling). I’m not a fan of LED, but some people love it. Just make sure you like the type of light they put out before you bite the bullet on them....See MoreNew open concept, need design advice...
Comments (4)I know, couldn’t see how to add more pics. But figured this pic showed the entire area and yes, you’ll have to use a lil imagination to envision the painted cabinets 🤦🏽♀️. I’ve looked at lots of pics, but just wondering if anyone had a similar situation and if anyone could advise whether or not to keep fans or go for cool accent lights (& what kind). Or if I NEED to match handles and lights, etc. 🤷🏽♀️...See MoreAdvice on paint colors for built-in bookshelves in open concept?
Comments (5)Thanks All! Sounds like we all agree to get rid of the red wall first :) I like the idea of priming the cabinets and then seeing how we feel with them in a "white family" of colors. Good idea to replace the beams - the bright white is so jarring. In our current home, we used White Dove for trim and Revere Pewter on walls, with warm wood floors, which actually made it all feel warm and not sterile. I want to see if White Dove could be a good choice with the light in the new house since it's a warmer white without a strong undertone. Possibly lighter shelves up top and a darker tone for the cabinets (and new doors)? We'll also likely repaint the kitchen cabinets white so I am a little worried about white walls, white cabinets being too much? Possibly a darker grey/green on lower cabinets with white shelves and/or white with colored backboard?...See Moremark_rachel
