Garage Entrance Dilemma for 1963 Bi-Level

We have a 1963 Bi-Level home with a little curb appeal. We plan to paint the exterior a dark grey color to unify the different materials, free us from the pink brick pallette and allow the house to disappear a little more into the trees. Our dilemma is how we enter our home. The main entrance (on the side of the house) feels remote and we never use it. We, and our guests, enter through the garage door to a set of dark painted wood stairs that take us to the sunporch where we park our shoes, backpacks, etc. The stairs are enclosed by louvred panels that provide privacy, but block the light and do not keep out the cold.

We want to convert one side of our two car garage into a pedestrian entrance and mudroom. The garage currently gets wet and very cold. We want a welcoming and beautiful threshold, not a garage door filled in with siding and a pedestrian door. An architect has suggested that we add an entrance next to the garage instead. We'd love any ideas about how to solve this problem.
