playing with and sorting buttons...any other old time play things
Comments (13)I guess I was a quiet little girl, I played cards...had a set of Authors and Old Maid cards...and my great grandmother taught me to play casino. My grandfather made me a spool knitter and I made miles of that stuff and then coiled it for mats. I had a bead loom. And for several yearsI had a washing machine box which got folded up and stored in the garage when it wasn't a house. It had a door with a knob on it and windows with shutters and even a chair inside. The grand kids loved it! And there was always a sandbox....I remember once when my husband was planning on doing some brick work in the backyard and he had about 2 tons of builders sand dumped on the drive way. Like magic that pile gathered kids with little cars and dolls and it was perfectly silent as each one made roads and ran their little cars around!...See MorePowder Room DIY remodel play-by-play
Comments (20)Yay, another full day off to work on remodeling! We finished up the last 20 square feet of tiling, and I'll do the final grout tomorrow. I put the baseboards in the laundry room part, and here's how it looks, before and after. The before doesn't show the floor, but it was the same gray berber carpet you see in other photos. How nice to finally have tile! In addition to the tile, the walls are now a soft cheery yellow instead of grayish-off-white. The cupboards have been banished to the garage. I decided the powder room paint wouldn't do, so I went paint shopping and bought a sample (Lowe's now sells 7-oz trial cans). I liked it much better, so I went back and bought a gallon, but when I put it on, it turned out it was a different color from the trial one (more butterscotch than pumpkin). Here's the confused wall with original bright yellow on the right, final color on the bottom and trial color on the top left. I actually liked the butterscotch more than the trial pumpkin, so we stuck with it. I cut the baseboards and DH worked on installing the toilet and vanity, cutting the feet down on the back and trimming the baseboard around the edge of the vanity trim. (Thanks to those who helped out with ideas how to make that fit.) Here's how it now looks! We're still waiting for the faucet to arrive (online purchase), so I'll post the final photos when we get it in. We just need to finish up the last of the grout, install the casings, do a bunch of caulking and we're done!...See MoreDid you attend a one room school house?
Comments (24)I attended a one room school house from 1st through 8th grade. I had the same teacher for all 8 years and though she traveled 45 minutes through heavy, slippery snow, she never missed a day. One year we had 22 students but the average was 18. Mrs Hornsby came from Oaklahoma to California during the Dust Bowl. She wanted to be a nurse. Her father insisted she become a teacher. We had no aide and often the older grades taught the younger grades. We were well known for town potlucks and putting on elaborate plays like Tom Sawyer, etc. We had hot lunches to die for and no one was able to skip over eating veggies. Every single morning at 10:15, we had fresh warn cookies and hot chocolate for a snack. Since my parents worked, I was able to leave school to take the clothes off the line when it started to sprinkle. "Make sure you fold them and come right back." When my sister and was sick, she would drop by our house on her way to school and take our temp., send someone to our house with cookie and hot chocolate at 10:15 and send us lunch at noon. Before she left town, she would make one more personal visit to make sure we weren't too hot. We square danced every Thursday, had the choice of art or reading weekly readers on Friday and had 45 minutes of fast paced PE (to a record) daily. We gardened in the yard in the spring, winning awards for our efforts. Mrs Hornsby was the classic school teacher. Her plaid skirt outfits with bows perfectly suited her braids, always wrapped neatly around her head. I saw her hair down one time. My sister and I arrived at school early and Mrs Hornsby was sitting with her head on her desk and her waist length hair falling straight. She quickly went into the bathroom and recovered. That was the day her father died. Years later, I questioned her as to why she never took a day off. She looked at me and said, "I did once but the children didn't like the sub., so I couldn't take time off." I loved her like a second mom....See Moreplaying in the Kitchen Christmas 2008
Comments (36)shakleemom: I have a Caldera 36" gas cooktop and a Miele built in deep fat fryer. I have the 1400 cfm Tradewind remote blower roof mounted. I have 30" double Miele Perfect Clean ovens. My kitchen was all about appliances. The next thing was space to work and as I was able I fitted in design to be "pretty". I love the Caldera. a number of GW folks got it after I talked on and on about how great it is. My son and DIL are chefs trained at the NECI. The school uses this brand also as it is from Vermont. It is CHEAP and it works great. It was $850. plus 50 for shipping. You can't go wrong. Also the Miele technology is worth everything. THANK YOU ...I love sharing with others who also enjoy the cooking experience. c...See Morebengardening
