Bathroom Update Without Full Reno
Comments (42)If I were to live with this green marble bathroom for a long while, I'd embrace it, as Palimpsest says. My wallpaper would be bold and I'd consider pairing the green with gold, pink, purple and/or navy. Perhaps I'd paint the vanity and wall cabinet. Not sure if I'd use the wallpaper everywhere. Here's a picture from Barbara Sallick's The Perfect Bath. Green and gold powder room. I found these wallpapers that tickled my fancy as a possible pairing for this marble. (I found a bunch of other options but I found them a bit too pricey for a "temporary" refresh.) Amazonia from WallpaperDirect: JewelBox from Spoonflower: Palm Leaves from WallpaperDirect: Justina Blakely's Nana at Hygge & West: If you are tempted by wallpaper, make sure you get samples. There are so many shades of green out there and monitors are rarely true. Another idea that might work: use wallpaper samples as your art. Good luck and please keep us posted!...See MorePlease help to update my fireplace!
Comments (23)Hi Lynn- Congrats on your new home! It's not just the stone of your fireplace that's the problem. The mantle is off. It is too wide. I can't tell if it is too tall, I'd need to see a photo from farther back. also the color of the mantel should match the color of the adjacent walls. That white is jarring. I think you need to select your new mantle before you decide on new filler (trim). I don't know what the white mantel is made of. Can you just remove the mantel shelf and replace it with a better proportioned one, and leave the rest of it there? What type of fuel does the fireplace use? If it is wood burning and you will actually use it, I would get rid of that white carpet for sure and make sure you have a hearth that is sufficiently long enough to catch any sparks. Every municipality has a code, but would add extra distance to that. If you are going to have a gas or electric fireplace with non combustible logs or just flames, that isn't an issue....See MoreCan this foyer be updated without help/miracles?
Comments (48)"...That includes the detritus that Covid has littered our lives with, such as masks and sanitizers. Kristen Peña, of San Francisco’s K Interiors, noted that while we must stay safe, “it’s important that your entry has a more-welcome, less-E.R. feel.”" This made me chuckle. My local COVID rules mean my entry can't welcome anyone who doesn't live here and my family doesn't care if the entry hints at an E.R. The next tip recommends a Persian rug for the entry - a much better choice than an industrial grade one. I really can't wrap my head around that one for my 4-season climate. Salt and slush on a Persian carpet?!? *shudders* The article is behind a paywall so that's as far I got. Another question: what do I do after I have a mirror above the table? One person said the lamp was useless (pretty accurate), others said to get a taller one, or a wider one, or two lamps. What do YOU think? This is your entry to make as functional and as appealing as you choose. If the current lamp is useless, does it make sense for you to replace it or place two there? There are no actual laws about all this decor stuff. I happen to like the look of a table lamp and I would place one in my entry if I could. Do you have other table lamps in your house to try in the spot? Start with trying out stuff like that to see what makes sense to you function and look-wise. There's usually more than one way to achieve one's decor goals. And baby steps make a lot of sense for many of us! In my case, my taste and budget aren't even on speaking terms so I always start by deciding on a budget for a space before I get too enamoured with the inspo pics. The next consideration that truly determines my project scope is how much time and effort I have and want to deploy on the project. Your mind might be reeling from all the ideas shared in the thread but if you keep functionality in mind as you mull over the ideas, you'll be just fine. Best of luck with your project and hope you'll post "after" pics. :)...See MoreI posted about my baseboards and fireplace. This is my updated update.
Comments (38)Absolutely beautiful. I love it!!! (Now that you said she's wearing a white dress I blew it up and see it just fine. However on a quick first glance on a small screen it did indeed look like a severed head. I would not recommend changing a thing about it just because of that though. LOL. It's incredibly well done and in person would be a very different experience than on a tiny screen...) You have a great eye. Normally I'm not a fan of black baseboards, but seeing your eye and aesthetic I say go for it. It's not quick, but it's not particularly hard - just tedious. Thank you for sharing with us. If you do tackle the baseboards I'd love to see the after.......See MoreHeidi M
