Seeking Info. about Sugar Maple as Bonsai
Comments (9)Leaf defoliation does shorten internodes but it should only be done sparingly as this does take away momentum from growth and will weaken the growth that does take place if it is done to excess. Every other year is a good rule of thumb when doing drastic manipulations. The problem with Acer sacharum and Acer sacharinum is that they do not reduce their leaf size much using this method. But this should not discourage you from using these species of trees. If you are looking to make effect bonsai art with either of these species you should consider pursuing larger examples to work with so that the leaves are more in scale with the over all composition. -G...See MoreWhats these weird lesions on my blueberry stems?Should I be concerned?
Comments (5)Well crap. Someone actually said stem canker. I knew it. I actually was very scared to mention that word and had a slight hope somewhere in my mind that it was not canker but now that someone has made it clear I guess I can go into definite despair. Websites say to cut down all branches affected by canker. Is that really going to help it and is it even worth it or do I have to junk this blueberry completely?...See MoreI think I just killed my Sugar Maple
Comments (6)Your problem sounds more complicated than what you describe. More information and adding some pictures would help those reading this visualize the situation. Have you been watering the tree up until you worked on the mulch problem? Working on a stressed tree where you might have broken surface roots with the rake could explain the wilting. How much top soil did you add to the surface of the mound? It would take more than a couple inches of dirt to smother roots imo. How deep is the mulch? You only need 2-3" on top, to protect the soil from the hot sun and hold moisture. I personally would be hesitant using freshly ground mulch, unless I knew it was completely dead wood and bark. Heaping stuff on that contains green or sap wood, could result in various gases given off as it breaks down, at least for the first week or two. Did you water it good after you were finished? And continue to water as needed afterwards? If it's been really hot and dry there as you describe, anything that upsets the tree could cause it to react and show signs of stress....See MoreQuestion about avoiding sugar: Is maple syrup a good sub?
Comments (23)LOL! Good one, Linda. So true. I don't like sugary drinks, but do sometimes indulge in a diet soda because I do like them. I also like cookies. So I might have a cookie with a diet soda. I'm under no illusions regarding the sugars, starches and effects of artificial sweeteners. I also do think that a mandarin orange with a glass of water--a common snack for me--which has more than twice the sugar of a cookie and diet soda, has more "nutrition" than sugar. :) Whole fruit and clean water are better than refined flour/sugar and chemical water, but it's not an alternative to sugar. The question on the maple syrup is quantity. As has been said, the difference in glycemic index number for the amount one would likely put in a standard serving of coffee is negligible. Glycemic index does matter for a lot of people with sugar processing issues--which is a much larger group than just diabetics. But with the maple syrup as sweetener, how much syrup is used? Does it alter the coffee flavor enough with a smaller dose than solid sugar? Does the smaller amount of sugar by volume mean that they're using significantly less sugar? Does the psychological effect of using one of the most expensive sugars boost their feelings of contentment, thereby affecting their body chemistries? Is calling it "healthier" just an excurse to indulge in real maple syrup? Really really really good coffee doesn't need sweetening. I'm not interested enough in coffee to become one of the mad scientists who perfect the craft. There was a fabulous restaurant near where I lived during my mid-20's which had awful parking, so died, but they also had the best coffee I've ever had (always--not a one off accident). Very rarely have I met its match--including by said mad scientists at home (I saw a report of some commercial ones an hour away who might have the answer) so I just don't bother with it. Still, a better way to deal with the issue at hand is to switch to tea. Both Darjeeling and Oolong are delicious without sugar or cream....See Morenewhostalady Z6 ON, Canada
