How much flatware?

A few years ago I noticed our day dinnerware (mikasa) and flatware (oneida) was starting to have issues. We had it for years and just continuing my update as we have all new glassware. We switched to Fiesta dinnerware (being casual and having matching pieces was important). Now I am very tired of the creep of rust on the flatware. I am trying to figure out how many settings of flatware we should get? I want heavy weight 18/8 or /10 (and the matching fiesta type does not interest us).

Why do I ask? We have a set of 30 now plus at least 3 matching hostess sets. It was picked so it worked with our formal and day china and that amount would be enough for the occasional large family party. I keep some of it in a box and the rest in the drawer. We no longer have such large parties.. realistically the total number of folks we have had at one time, for years, has not exceeded 12. I do not desire to continue storing or pay for such a large amount of flatware.

We are mainly a household of 6 that runs the dishwasher once a day. 3 take lunches and 2 sometimes brings our flatware. Two might eat hot cereal or eggs in the am and rest do toast. I like tea and use spoons with that but I am OK using the larger tablespoons for it.

On a daily basis our dinnerware is about 16 settings and rarely we run out of dinner plates. Knives are popular and I have 12 in the drawer. Our teaspoons number around 18. Sometimes these pieces run out but not so much I feel compelled to dig out my reserve box in storage. Suggestions?
