Moonlight garden
Comments (10)oh yes, definitely white nicotiana; Only the lonely. Big 4foot tall plants that smell amazing at night. It is getting harder to find as everyone is going for the fancy colors or the dwarf ones. The dwarves have next to no scent and the big ones may be scented but none compare to "Only the Lonely". Being an heirloom variety it is not as common, at least not around here. With the limited space nurseries are sticking with the 'new' stuff. Or perhaps because of higher density housing people don't have big yards anymore and are leaning towards dwarf varieties of everything. ANYWAY enough of my verbal diarrheah (sp). Only the Lonely, hands down....See Moreogr open house!! (bay area people)
Comments (8)I copied this from the website: "The Roses are Blooming at Vintage Gardens! During May our private garden of roses will be open to visitors on Saturdays and Sundays from 10 am to 3 pm, as well as on Thursday, May 10th and Thursday, May 24th, from 9 am to 1 pm. Please come to visit. The garden is free, but we do ask that you make a charitable donation, which helps to support the Heritage Rose Foundation and its good works in preserving historic roses. Check our events page for more information! We close the garden on ONE Sunday, May 20th, in order to participate in the greatest assembly of old roses held under one roof; the Celebration of Old Roses, at the El Cerrito Community Center. Please join us at the Celebration as well for the worldÂs biggest aromatherapy session! GreggÂs Guided Tours of the Garden On Saturday mornings from 10:30 am until noon, Gregg will be leading tours of the rose garden, tracing the story of roses through the chronological layout of the garden. Learn about the many classes of roses, how to plant and grow them, and how to incorporate roses in garden design. Tours are limited to 20 people, and are $25 per person." Also - I haven't been there yet, but I beleive they now have a (smaller) retail location out of Garden Valley in Petaluma (LA/Carol/Paula/Pam, correct me if I'm wrong). Comments (52)I LOVE PURPLE BUTTONS! I am getting giddy just thinking about its late springflush of bloom. PB and Midnight Blue are the Marie Pavies of the purple rose world. Perfectly sized for my inner city garden and absolutely joy-inspiring whenever I spot a cluster of blooms. In fact, Marie Pavie and PB look fanatic side by side. Breathtaking! All summer. Violette is one of my very favorite roses! (I think I'm repeating myself.) It is my top purple rambler. The color, when backlit, is breathtaking. I have been visiting mine daily. I can hardly wait for those little bud clusters to open.... Carol...See MoreDavid Austin: the Leander Group
Comments (38)@ann beck 8a ruralish WA That is really interesting about the high cold tolerance being a sign of possible heat resistance! I will be able to test that out with some of the ones I planted this year, especially the rugosa hybrids and Comte de Chambord, both of which supposedly to do very well in Scandinavia. I did only a light pruning this season, our heavier pruning season is in September right after the worst of the heat. When I prune Wild Edric in September I will try rooting the cuttings, but I must admit that rooting cuttings is not my strong suit! I keep trying though! I am currently trying to root little bits of Comte as well as Autumn Damask that I clipped off when I planted the bare roots. I will try with Wild Edric in September and will definitely post if successful! You are lucky to be in a mild climate! It seems to me that zone 8 is really the goldilocks zone for growing roses, where they get some real winter but not too extreme, and a long enough growing season, with warm but not deadly hot summers. I hope your roses will do fantastic this year!...See MoreDave4bWY
