change OS from win 7 enterprise

might buy a laptop from work. fairly new I7 but it has window 7 enterprise. would it be better/easier to get a new OS so i can do a complete new reload with a new OS? i dont want any links or attachments to the old OS. and no i will never use it to do any "work" stuff

Do you like Win 10? I found Win 7 easier to use, with less of a "we know best what's for you" attitude, but I had to bite the bullet and use Win 10.

What would you want to accomplish? Win 7 Enterprise is solid and may have an extended support date (beyond 2020) anyway.

If the OS is relatively current, you'll gain little by changing to Win 10, other than changes that may or may not be true improvements in the user interface. If you use those at all, many don't.

If you're a knowledgeable and more experienced user, maybe you'd want to load some flavor of Linux, though your question suggests that's not the case.

An OS is silent and in the background, I wouldn't give it another thought.

camp, I really do NOT like gmail but have to use it to access the mail accounts I have that I used to access smoothly via Outlook Express on WinXP. With dialup, I have to wait for ever for gmail to load and be able to open my mail. I think you answered my first part OK. Thanks. I assume if I DL'd and installed WLM, it would ask at the time if I would want it to be my default mail then. BUT-----Would that only be for on this computer or affect my other computer and make it default also automatically?

Thanks, Owbist. I tried that yesterday, but nothing changed with WMP. However, I thought it might be a good idea to redo the procedure. Some striking changes occurred this time. All of my WAV files now open in Windows Live Movie Maker. I tried to play a music CD and got the box that said Windows couldn't open the file. When I checked the properties of the music, it shows as a CDA File... (I'm not alarmed - I know there has to be a fix.) OK, I thought... I'll just go back to the Media Features and redo the procedure. However, there are now no check marks in the WMP or Media Center boxes! I record 3 church services a week on this laptop. I take the sound from - I believe it's called a preamp - (signal too strong directly from mixer) and am able to record in Audacity. I now have audio in Audacity whereas I lost it after the defrag. However, the wav files I made from the audacity project files now open in window movie maker and are unplayable... I don't think I will ever defrag this laptop again!!! :)

AZ, I understand what you are saying, but Emma makes a lot of sense. If users are not prepared for progress we would all still be using Commodores or in the least Win3.1. We have a whole bunch of Dell XP SP2 systems in our building. Six in our office alone. Ours are going to be replaced by a governmental entity due to security, non-MS software demand, and future anticipated expansion. You can bet many of the other offices will have to replace their systems via their budget as their offices have systems integrated for use with our data. And, we did survive without a burp when we switched from Win98 and Win2000 to WinXP. Bobbie, Hope you are sitting down. You know how I was dragged kicking and screaming into the post Win98 era as I loved my Win98 system. And, yes you know I love my Vista system even more and have defended it for all the bad publicity it received. My plans right now is to buy a entry to mid-level laptop with W8 just so I can play. See why I said I hope you were sitting down. Even though I think there is way too much going on now with the Internet, and can only guess as to what the future will bring we users have a choice. Be part of it or allow it to pass us by. Do I think everyone with a W7 should race out and purchase a W8? Of course not. However, two generations of O/S behind could become the future limit. DA

Yes, as long as you have a program that will "clone" the hard drive. Several free ones will do this. I use EaseUS ToDo for this purpose. It can copy files or make an image (clone) of the entire drive including operating system (Win 7, in your case) as well as all programs and applications. Look up some of these programs and read what they can and cannot do. But if you have the original Windows 7 disks, you have other choices as well. If you format your hard drive, you should start with a clean drive and then just re-install the OS and any programs plus your pictures, documents, etc. I don't understand why you would now be out of drive space just because you "loaded the system a couple of other times." How did you go about doing this?

Enterprise comes in more than a couple of flavors. Some are considered retail and renew/retain their license every so often while online.

Some the license needs re-verification every 6 months max, and will verify only when on the company network.

You can run a command to tell if retail channel or not;

only the it dept can add/remove stuff on my work computer. i have no control. how can a locked down enterprise os be set free? no link to former life? uh, i am 30+. a dinosaur. maybe i dont get this new computer stuff

If they can't or won't open permission for changes to you (which is always possible), then you probably would do better not buying it. It otherwise will be of very limited use as a personal PC.

if they cant open permission? uh ok. remove HD. install new HD and new OS. now i have a NEW computer? or are you saying none can do that?

You can still buy Windows 7, as you are 'rebuilding' your computer. You may have some trouble as all the drivers you need may not be available. It depends on your specific computer. I 'rebuilt' 2 computers (2 separate Windows licenses) with no problem. A 3rd computer that came with Window 10 that I tried to go backwards installed without problem, but there were no drivers installed. I had a keyboard interface, but no mouse, no USBs, & most of all, no internet (ethernet capability) drivers so I ended up with a spare drive.

I'm saying it shouldn't be necessary for YOU to buy or do anything.

They should be able to enable administrator rights to you and off you go. I'm not an IT technician and maybe what I'm saying isn't the case, it's an easy question for you to ask them. I can't imagine a company would sell PCs to employees that are locked and can't be used to add and subtract software and adjust settings in a normal consumer user way but that could be wrong too. With such limitations, who would want one unless they're giving them away for free?
