Custom Window Treatment Question
Comments (12)Hey Jeannie, don't feel bad - I complained and complained and my findings with our renovation is that most all of the men doing the work in our apartment apparently are stuck in the stone age and automatically disregard women's opinions. If I raise my voice and pitch a mini-fit, that got results (but I hated doing it - raises my blood pressure!) or when I withheld payment until the job was done to my satisfaction, that got results, too. It was funny to see how differently they responded to my husband, however, on the extremely rare occasions he chose to get involved (only at my insistence.) p.s. not to open a whole can of worms about social class and national origin, but suffice it to say that I have managed lots of men in a white collar job, one that requires at least a master's degree in a technical field, and none of them ever had an attitude toward me as a woman or a manager, or failed to do their jobs properly or treated me with disrespect. The workers in my renovation, however, clearly took a dim view of me ever suggesting things, like "Please cover the furniture before you paint the mouldings" - to which a painter actually told me, "oh, I don't need to, I'm neat." to which I replied, "That's great you are neat, now, cover the furniture!" So, in your situation, after learning the lesson I here (the hard, hard way), I would have said, "That's quite wrinkled, please steam it out before leaving." And if they didn't bring a steamer, I would say, "Let's set a date and time right now for you to return." And don't worry if it is a separate trip for them. NOT YOUR PROBLEM! They should have come prepared. Sorry for the rant. I had a million things similar to what you described go wrong over a period of many months and finally only the last few months figured out how to deal with people. Good luck!...See MoreShopping around for custom window treatments
Comments (21)i'm back. thanks for all the great posts. i've been very encouraged!!! - Lyban : the pricing is for 2 cushions each of 2 different fabrics. I had cut and paste from the quote so it didn't transfer well. The second set of cushions there was a typo and it should have around $1020 total not $120. So each cushion was around $500 each. - i received an email from another member who relayed a story of local shop (which as it turns out is the same area that i live in - wash, dc) and how the pricing is sketchy at best and perhaps on purpose. Which encouraged me to go look at another shop. - i went to g street fabrics here and they were more than happy to work with me! i thought they might be put off my shopping around but they were willing to try and find the fabrics and said they had a good sale going on. They even broke down the pricing for me right there. A big chunk (almost half) is the actual cushion and wrap. Her pricing was probably 20% lower to 50% lower from what we calculated there (other shop must have way overquoted on one of the fabrics because it was double the price of g street). - the woman i was working with at the previous shop was let go so i would starting from scratch with them anyway. her subtitute didn't even have the quote that was sent! Fortunately my designer had taken good notes so i had enough to piece together what was quoted....See Moreunused decor items--Sell? Donate?
Comments (16)If I can't sell an item on CL, I lower the price. How about lowering your price down to $45? If not sold, then down to $30 for both? I posted a few pieces for sale on CL this weekend. One of them, a beaten-up Mission style nightstand was sold for $25 in a couple of hours. The remaining two items are still up. If no takers within an week, I'll start lowering the prices in $5 increments. Usually it works. I also put OBO in my ads. Also, how long has your ad been on CL? If I sell something in 3-4 weeks, it's normal. If I sell a piece in less than two weeks, I'm lucky. A high end (and higher priced) Italian designer set of dining chairs in need of restoration took me 6 months to sell. Goodwill and Salvation Army are my last resorts....See MorePricing for Custom Window Treatments
Comments (10)Not to mention that if you know even sew at all now, it will probably be a good long time before anything you turn out would look as nicely finished as a professional seamstress' work. Wouldn't you hate all that lovely fabric you chased down to end up looking even the tiniest bit homemade--- in a bad way? I agree that the prices seem very low, and in fact that would bother me a little. Don't just go on her reputation, as not everyone holds the same standards. Insist on seeing examples of her work before you commit....See MoreRelated Professionals
