What color/stain for trim/cabinets in basement?

We're finishing our basement and not sure what color/stain to do our trim/built-in cabinets? Our upstairs trim/cabinets are a dark espresso almost. We want to go lighter if we can. Would white be a good contrast or is it too drastic? TIA

I certainly would not do one more thing in espresso it is a very dated color already and was so connected to cheap Chinese cabinets that I would never have it in my house.So I think in a basement white would be a nice change

Here are some progress photos. The room is trimmed out now and primed with BM Silver Cloud. My initial intent was to use that for the ceiling and then Mt Rainier Grey for the walls. Now, with the prime, it looks too cold. So, I'm going one further step down to BM Winter Lake and changing the ceiling color to BM Harbor Fog. With no natural light, it's tricky with these colors. I'll post more photos when we are complete. Any comments/suggestions are welcome!

My initial reaction would be not to try to match the stain, because it will not be easy to do. I would go lighter or darker, but something that blends nicely. Or a painted cabinet with a darker glaze to tie into the trim. Do you have pictures of the existing woodwork?

I am no help with colors, but I will advise you to prime the oil painted fixtures before painting them with latex paint. I once lived in a house with all oil painted walls. Back then, you had to prime them with oil-based primer to switch to latex paint, or the latex would simply peel off in time. Since I could not breathe oil paint fumes, there was no way for us to paint the house interior! Nowadays, I believe that latex primer will do the trick.

I would go with something lighter. They don't have to "match" what is upstairs. I like light & bright in the basement, but you don't have to go white. I would pick a light wood stained cabinet.
