Hi, I have a similar question. I'm re-doing the powder room and have removed the large glass mirror that was mounted above the (36") vanity. I'd rather not put it back up and instead put a framed mirror there. My problem: on the wall to the right of the vanity (the door wall) we have a wooden, louvered-door medicine cabinet (from the 70s). I am thinking if I have a wooden framed mirrow over the vanity, the medicine cabinet isn't going to look nice, but I don't know what to replace it with. Any suggestions about a new mirror, the old mirror or a new medicine cabinet style would be appreciated. Thank you!

What kind of cabinets do you have behind the range? Are they regular shelves? It seems like the cutting into them in order to put in the electrical and gas connections would be fairly minor. It shouldn't take much space in the cabinets - a few inches high and a couple of inches deep along part of the 30" of the range. If the range can fit flat against a wall, that probably means just the space for a junction box and for a gas outlet and shut off valve. So you won't be loosing much storage space. In most places, code requires having an accessible shut off valve for the gas. We found the cabinet behind our rangetop to be a convenient location for it. The GC may have intended to put in a spacer instead, but it may be better to not lose floor space to a spacer all along the cabinets and have a little lost space in one cabinet. I don't understand why you would have to cut into the cabinets beside the range - it should be possible just altering the cabinet behind the range. I also don't understand why the range isn't going in all the way now - does part of the range project in back? Normally when a range goes against a wall, the gas and electrical connection are recessed into the wall but the range itself doesn't stick into the wall space at all. So your range without the connections having been put in should be able to slide all the way in. Are you sure that the cabinets are installed square? I wonder if they are a little off so that the space between the cabinets gets narrower as you get to the back.

It's true, you have three different wood tones going on. Unless these cabinets are so far off from your sample, I don't think having the cabinets redone will be an option. It looks like the entire kitchen has already been installed. Can we see other pictures of your home and the other side of the kitchen? You say semi- open floor plan, so maybe there is a way to transition from one tone to the next. First option: Although not ideal, all the elements unto themselves are nice. You might just get used to all of it together, once you are past the reno stage and back into the living day to day stage of life. The door in the kitchen can be painted to match your walls. That way it will recede and not be as noticeable. Not sure of how the other side of the kitchen is, but you can probably put a nice runner or two rugs somewhere to break up all the wood.

It might or might not be a terrible idea depending on your being able to move the stove a few inches to its left. FWIW, this question comes up here with some frequency. Often, the responses range from those who (a) feel the layout with an open stove side next to a doorway is utterly unacceptably dangerous to (b) those who say you work with the space and budget you have, so having stove next to a doorway can be workable, and (c) everything in-between. For some recent examples, you might look at these three threads while waiting for further responses here: * "ok to install cooktop with no cabinets to one-side," * "range-next-to-back-doorway," and * "need ideas to cover exposed side of bosch slide in-range no oem part." IOW, its one thing If you have the time and budget for a blank slate renovation and quite another if the reno will be limited to making the best of an existing space. That said, I'm inclined to with agree Blueberry_Bundtcake and opaone about the oven and sink obstructing each other in the layout shown; as you noted, you can't open the oven door while using the sink and can't get to the sink when the oven is opened. But it is worse than that. For one thing, any pulls or knobs on the sink cabinet doors will block the oven door from opening fully. For another, there is practical concern with the heat escaping the side of the oven door where it closes against the chassis. Generally, ranges sit with front of the stove and oven door a bit proud of the cabinets. That keeps the heat from crack along side edge of the door from damaging the cabinets to the side. (The heat is not just when the door is opened.) Even worse if your stov's broiler is one that operates with the oven door cracked open. Your rendering appears to show the "crack" of the oven door right up against the adjoining cabinets which would, indeed, be a bad idea. The way to avoid the problem might be to skooch the stove to its left --- probably requiring cutting away some of the trim of the adjoining doorway and putting a corresponding spacer between the stove and the sink base cabinet. The result might not be pretty but should be sufficient to protect the base cabinets to the right. Could you instead, maybe, swap the stove and fridge locations? It would not be ideal but I think it could make your kitchen easier to work in. But, maybe there is another doorway just beyond the fridge? (The kitchen in my 120 year-old house was built like that; there are four doorways into it.). At least, having the stove on what appears to be an exterior wall could allow you to easily vent to the outside whether you have an actual hood or need to go with an OTR microwave. A "dimensioned diagram" could indeed be helpful to getting better responses. Also, some indication of the budget for your project as well as noting where the existing power and/or gas lines for the stove are located. Seems to me that it will be one thing if you are having to work with the existing service locations and quite another if the budget is big enough for relocating them.
