Can paint help dark, dreary house?
Comments (22)Jeannie01 - get sample pots of both colors and mix them. It will be a 50/50 ratio so if you like it, you can duplicate it yourself 1 gallon of each. Blonde is an interesting color because it has what I call a strong SW signature green edge. If the light you have to work with is weighted with green beams, then that green SW edge is going to be enhanced. Blonde will show with a skunky green undertone. Blonde works and shows golden and warm in rooms where the light quality is short in the green area of the spectrum. andreadeg - no, not necessary to custom tint for each room. Color constancy would kick in making it a waste of time. Color constancy is best explained with yellow bananas. We've come to know what color a banana should be. Look at a banana in your kitchen. What color yellow is it? Take the same banana to another room with a different quality of light. You'll see it as the same yellow banana. White trim room to room works in a similar manner. Color constancy happens because color is a moving target. The quality of light is in constant flux and change and color constancy is how the human vision system deals with it. There can be dramatic peaks and valleys - like certain times of day when the white trim reads more peachy than others and at which point, it's exaggerated and you can see it and feel it. Multi-pigment and full spectrum is actually more advantageous during the color selection process. While the features of a paint color loaded up to respond to a broad spectrum of light always contributes to the quality of atmosphere, the drama of the FS color experience does wane. Because of the phenomena of color constancy. Whole lotta of discussion and exploration to be had with this topic. yayagal, Yep, mutli-pigment and full spectrum whites can be the solution. A few years ago it was harder to find those right whites. It is easier now because of the range of product to choose from, even Farrow & Ball whites are good options. Farrow & Ball isn't multi-pigment or FS but has an identifiable nuance that is suited to a broad range of light qualities. Can also take a look at the actual formula. Looking at a color's formula, like a blue or green, is a complete waste of time but white is the exception. Again, quite a discussion to be had when it comes to formulas and the information that can or cannot be gleaned. When it comes to dimly lit rooms, if you list to the color tips and tricks, you can't win. i.e. Dark paint colors will make dark rooms look smaller and at the same time white will never come alive in a dark room. What's a girl to do. ;)...See MoreTo Paint the Dark Wood Ceiling White or live with the Wood?
Comments (3)Agree their is good wood and bad wood. How high are your ceilings? I just recently painted my office ceiling a test coat of BM San Antonio Gray. The walls are SW High Reflectance White. I absolutely love the tension between the darker ceiling and the bright white walls. It reminds me of the sky when it's still sunny out but the sky is turning dark as an impending storm is moving in. For me it works but maybe not for everybody. Our ceilings are 9' high....See MoreHouse is under contract - moving to a rental help
Comments (23)3katz4me - Yes, we do need three bedrooms. Especially for so long. A bedroom for us, a bedroom for me (snoring DH) and an office since I work from home. Aok27502 - There's a young family, first time buyer neighborhood with lots of rentals within about 20 minutes of our property. I think that's about as close as we can get. Tinam61 - Thanks Tina! I'm pretty excited about having a new adventure. We seem to get the itch every 10 years so I hope this next move will be the last. Your rental situation sounds ideal! Kippy - I love my furniture too much and a lot of it is quality or custom made, so no plans to ditch it anytime soon! Graywings123 & Maddie - I'm concerned about a shipping container or Pods - something left outside. I'm in Central Texas and the summer temps can stay in the 100s for week's at a time. Stuff could really get messed up under those conditions. DLM2000 - I know, I've been following your build! I really do prefer to have everything with us, even if it's stacked all over the place. We decluttered and put stuff in storage before going on the market. The storage unit is a conditioned 10x10 space for $100/month. I think that's kind of expensive for such a small space. I'm so looking forward to that freedom! Good luck DLM, sounds like you're moving along smoothly with your build. Missymoo12 - Farmette, love that word! "My brain to my DH hands" is exactly how we are doing it. Luckily, he likes my ideas and I like his hammer swinging. We'll also sub out the major stuff and one of DH's best friends is an electrician - he'll come in handy! I wish we could do a mobile home, but there are restrictions against them in the area. Czarinalex - As I said to Gray and Maddie, we are in Central TX and I'm afraid it's just too hot here. I still might look into Pods, maybe they're insulated? Dyhgarden - We are still under contract and anything can happen, but thank you! You moved on my birthday! We had a huge garage sale (made $1800!) last year and we've purged as much as we can. Another option is the barn. Our plan is to do this in phases. First a well & septic, then a 1500sf metal barn, then house, then finishing out the barn. DH wants to add an office, music studio, storage room, bathroom and kitchenette to the barn. His idea is to use the conditioned space for living while building. It's about 600sf of conditioned spaced. It would be roughing it. No stove/oven (would have to use a grill outside!) and the washer/dryer would have to be rigged. I'm still thinking about that....See MoreHelp! I stained vinyl flooring in rental house
Comments (41)There's a product called "color-out/oops" or something like that which is sold at beauty supply places to people looking to remove hair dye , obviously the more times you've colored the more you'll have to use to get rid of the color- this stuff is to remove permanent dye even! - and while I do NOT recommend using it on your hair (unless you are hoping to do some serious damage to your hair) it may be just the thing you need to take care of your dye-spot. You can also get cheap glossy white paint and a paint brush to camouflage things, but if this is the biggest 'oops' your landlord has to worry about with you as their tenant, they are likely to handle the news a lot better than they would if you...burnt away part of the kitchen, let mold grow everywhere, invited a herd of cats to come in and pee on every scrap of carpet...It's a spot, normal wear and tear is expected in rentals....See MoreMegan Kraemer
