Norfolk Island Pine as Christmas Tree
Comments (22)In the early 2000's I got to go to Big Pine Key (Fla. Keys) with a freind of mine, and I saw a few NIP's growing quite impressively near my friends RV, they grow thin but tall when in ground in the semi-tropics, well, Maybe I should say "tropics" because down in the Fla Keys it doesn't usually get any colder than about 55-65 F in the worst of winter. But, anyhow, the Norfolk IS. Pines will grow much different when in the ground and a place where they won't be damaged by cold temps. Potted NIP's indoors will have the needles pretty much hanging downwards, but, when grown in the ground in a pretty warm area, the branches have needled growth that sticks upward, it is such a different form of growth, but, I assume that the upper growing foliage is likley the best way for the tree to grow. It's just so strange when you see the difference in the trees growth form, but, yes, you can grow the NIP indoors in winter, but, unless you get it used to more sun gradually, you could sun scald your NIP tree. They are usually all over the place in winter, Wal-Mart has them everywhere every winter, unless they have decided to not put many of them on display, maybe they are not as plenty-ful now? But, I know that many houseplants have a hard time living indoors all winter. I have tried and failed to keep NIP's happy for several winters in my home, but, maybe someone out there will be able to supply enough sun and moisture for their potted NIP. Good luck guys....See MorePotted Norfolk Island Pine. Few questions about size of pot
Comments (9)After growing these pines indoors, they definitely don’t like their roots disturbed. However, that doesn’t mean I don’t disturb them. With say a Ficus, I can be rough, remove all soil, blast roots with water and prune them and the tree won’t skip a beat. With the Norfolk Island pine, it always gives me a little bit of a hard time when I do a full repot. Some branches always die and fall off and it takes a little bit to get back on track. Mine hasn’t been repotted in over two years and is still currently putting out beautiful growth. im planning on repotting in June though. I would also wait until that point U S. If you’re in the northern hemisphere. If you’re in the Southern Hemisphere, well, them now is a great time. the 5:1:1 mix is a great choice for this tree....See MoreBeige-green caterpillar-like bugs in the soil of Norfolk Island Pine!
Comments (0)I bought a Norfolk Island Pine as a Christmas tree, and after the holidays repotted it and have kept it as houseplant. Shortly after repotting I noticed some beige-green caterpillar-like bugs crawling around in the top soil! I removed the ones I could see/find, put the plant outside for a few days and didn't notice any returning so I brought it back inside. Shortly after that, the same bugs returned. I went to a local garden store and was told that the most likely cause of the problem was unsterilized soil used for repotting (although I think I'd repotted other plants at the same time using the same bag of soil and haven't noticed any bugs in them), so I bought a bag of sterilized soil and repotted the tree. During repotting, I didn't see any bugs (I'd removed the ones visible on the top soil beforehand). This was a few months ago now and since that time I hadn't noticed any bugs. I was away for about 3 weeks, during which time a friend was watering my plants (she said she didn't notice any bugs during that time, but she also wasn't looking). Now that I'm back, I've removed about 15 dead bugs and one live one. Any ideas as to what these bugs are and what I should do to get rid of them once and for all? Any help would be much appreciated!...See MoreNorfolk Island Pine yellow leaves
Comments (3)its not uncommon for these to shed the oldest lowest branches ... on some level.. its normal understand these are forest trees in their native area ... though they are commonly grown as houseplants ... its not easy to keep them perfect ... this their future potential when really happy...: https://duckduckgo.com/?t=ffcm&q=Araucaria+heterophylla&iax=images&ia=images it is a tree .. so err towards less water ... i seem to recall that the parents watered theirs once a month.. if that.. and it was in front of a furnace register for 5 months a year ... it didnt look as prime as yours.. but it wasnt much worse .. my point being.. perhaps you are doing just fine.. and there is nothing to worry about ... lets try not to harm it with too much love ... is there any reason it couldnt go outside in full shade for summer??? ken ps: what are you going to do with it.. when its 2 feet taller than the ceiling ... lol ......See Moreken_adrian Adrian MI cold Z5
