planting a coconut indoors
Comments (2)If you can manage to get the Dwarf Malay coconut, it's really superior in terms of indoor growing. I prefer this variety because it feathers out at a much younger/smaller stage than the regular species. I managed to over a couple of winters until it finally developed bug problems but would give the Dwarf another shot. You obviously need a good southern exposure and a warm winter home. I assume you have a coconut still in its husk (this is important). Just lay it have buried in VERY sandy soil and it keep it warm. Also, keep the soil somewhat moist but not sodden. Then put it out of sight and forget about it because it can take up to six months to germinate. The real trick is keeping it alive. Palmlover, I hate to tell you this but you may have buried your cycads alive. Even if the cycad looses ALL its leaves, that does not mean it is dead. I agree that Cycas revoluta probably does not make the easist completely indoor species (try Dioon or Encephalartos instead if really interested in cycads for the home. I keep my C. revoluta outside in full sun from about mid-late March into December. I overwinter the C. revoluta in a cold but frost-free garage. I have a few of these guys, and they weigh a ton (guess they are a few decades old by now) so out comes the dolly....See MoreMoving to Puerto Rico! ;-)...
Comments (8)Thanks all for posting. Yes! I really am excited about moving. Will have to check to see if there are many roses down in Puerto Rico. Haven't seen anyone post on this forum though, at least that I can remember. Nicey - I did see your pic of San Juan from the plane in your post a few days ago... Glad you had a good vacation! Florence - My roses will be around when I come back... I'll miss them probably more than they'll miss me, haha! Planning on returning for vacation during winter break in Dec/Jan, so I can winter protect everything then. Carol - I really like the brighter colors too. And Perfect Moment lasts for a long time! Most of the roses I bought this year were bright. But I had to look at the diagram of my rose bed just to make sure that first picture really WAS Perfect Moment - normally it has a bright orange/red color. However, I think I like its pink side... Don't have to wear my shades just to look at it ;-)...See MoreMy five days in Puerto Rico (& stuff I learned)!
Comments (12)Thank you all! Mtn, yes! Your suggestion was perfect for a quick getaway! I really really need to start researching possible places to get reasonably priced art mementoes while traveling. I do look for things while on trips but really don’t have a direction and often end up trying to find something in touristy areas, without luck. I should have at least bought a small framed butterfly here http://www.butterflypeople.com/ You cannot tell by the pictures how lovely these are in their translucent magic unless you see them in person. Although I still haven’t given meditation a real try I have to say that just walking into a full gallery of this art form with the soothing music in the background puts one into a zone.
