Paint Design Dilemma Bathrooms

Painting acrylic shower pan

We are remodeling a bathroom. The contractor said we could cut costs substantially by keeping existing acrylic shower pan. Husband found on internet that these pans could be painted (also learned that you can't tile over). We have somewhat of a limited budget. Also, found that you can paint ceramic tiles floor & am considering that as well. Would appreciate ideas. Thank you!

I would not paint either, an acrylic shower pan the paint will not stay as It does flex slightly. Painting tile is a temporary fix at best.

Never heard of painting the acrylic pan. Can't imagine it would last very long, flex being a factor as pointed out by millworkman. There are a lot Pinterest posts on painting ceramic tiles though. Check Apartment Therapy as well. Could be a viable short term solution if you research and do it well.

What are the reno issues and what is your contractor proposing? An acrylic shower pan is not that costly. If you're leaving it in place, are you sure the shower waterproofing is done correctly?

"Question: can this hole be fixed so that it will be totally unnoticeable?" Claude-007: You will always be able to find this repair, even if I fixed it and I have an Invicon kit. As I have mentioned in another thread, when the homeowner screws up, my repairs look fantastic, when the contractor does, not so much. The standard you should set is this: "Would a professional home inspector readily find this repair?" If the answer is no, it's successful, if yes, maybe not. I mistakenly drilled some holes on my nephew's new dresser drawers. We bought some flat stainless steel plugs that went perfectly with his pulls to fill the holes. It looked great. Sometimes a contrast is better. How about some pictures? One up close and one farther away.

I have been working with Acrylic products for over 15-years...both as a former employee of Re-Bath...the worlds biggest acrylic bathroom remodeling co and more recently as owner of my own bathroom remodeling co. People often confuse acrylic with fiberglass. They are both plastic...but very different in nature. Acrylic is a non-porous surface and therefore stain resistant. Many acrylic companies take the extra step of adding products like Microban...this chemical literally fights bacteria. Companies that offer acrylic shower bases to the homeowner are Kohler...MTI...Americh...Jacuzzi...HydroSystems...Maax...among others. Hope that helps.

Hello Tartanup, Im from Canada as well, B.C. and researching shower pans as well since I want to avoid cleaning grout. Kohler still sells acrylic shower pans. The Kohler Signature Store in Vancouver has the Ballast, Groove and Archer on display and I believe they are all smooth not textured. If you go to Build.com and type in Kohler Ballast, you can scroll down to look at the reviews. I would say 20% comment them being slippery but others say no so I am hesitant as well. I would take safety over not having to clean grout though. I have those anti-slip strips and I don't like them for the same reason that HU-867564120 mentioned. Have you found any textured ones? I haven't seen one on display and would prefer to inspect one in person. Kohler does have a cast iron shower pan but it's pricey and I haven't been able to find a showroom that displays this product.

Only issues are labor costs. I hate the look of the acrylic pan! Are definitely planning on replacing tile on shower walls. No issues, just dated. Saw on pinterest painting of floor tile which interested me. It is in good shape & I ultimately wanted a solid color on floor so thought painting would cut labor costs alot as you wouldnt have to take up toilet or cabinets.
