Metasequoia, if you have room for two get the cultiver Metasequoia Ogon also.

Nyssa Sylvatica is a winner for fall color many folks skip.

I'm trying one of these purple leafed catalpas this year. I'll report later if I like it.

On a side note, got any prickly pear cacti? I'm putting some around my conifers that prefer it a bit drier.

I saw one of these Jillian Oaks up at the nursery a few weeks back. Had excellent yellow/orange fall color. Not sure if that's typical or not. I should have bought it and found a place later. http://www.elsberrydemocrat.com/jillian-oak-no-better-name-for-nurserys-newest-species/

Oh, Cornus controversa. A wide spreading full sun tolerating tree dogwood import. Not quite the fall color of our native but it grows in places it doesn't.

I just got into fruit trees. What about Honey Jar Jujube, persimmon trees? A lot of good reviews on the Orchard forum.

I looked up Jillian oak and controversa both sound very cool. Do not have many oaks in yard. White and burr oak. Have planted pecans. Only one doing really well is the Pawnee. Honey jar jujube sounds great also. I do have a wild persimmon tree in yard.

My own personal favorites are the various and colorful Cercis varieties (Merlot and The Rising Sun are must haves), many Cornus varieties in the kousa (Snowboy, Wolf Eyes, Satomi, Summer Gold), and alternafolia (Golden Shadows is IMO a must have) species, my Metasequoia both species and Ogon, many Picea pungens (The Blues is a gorgeous weeper), Witch Hazel varieties for that super early bloom, lots of Chamaecyparis species (Fuzzy Dwarf adds a wonderful texture) and of course all my Japanese Maple varieties too many to name. I keep meaning to add a Ginkgo but need to take the time to find just the right variety.

There's a million more I haven't gotten around to- we added some Bald Cypress out in our wooded area but they're still too young to judge.

If you like persimmons, check out Japanese persimmon trees, there are so many kinds. I only have a couple , more coming next spring.

I did buy a Sky Tower Ginkgo this fall.

European beech(fagus sylvatica) is a favorite of mine. There are many interesting cultivars. I wish I had room for larger ones like 'Asplenifolia'. I am growing 'Tortuosa' now and would also like to get 'Dawyck purple' and 'Aurea pendula'. My favorite conifer is the weeping Atlas cedar, cedrus atlantica 'Glauca pendula', which I do not have(yet) because it is not hardy in my zone(yet).

I reall want a big leaf magnolia. I would have to find a protected enough site for it? I‘ve looked at the hazel smith sequoia. I’m not sure how long it would live here. I hear they need the foggy mist once they get really large. I really like the‘ Dawyck purple‘ beech.

Yeah big leaf magnolia do better when protected from strong winds...sequoia do ok in the east just don't get as large...it's the fog that makes them huge. I seen a few 100 year old specimens in Rhode Island.
