Name That Plant!

Weed or keep? Popped up in flower bed.

Google image search search only turns up primrose but leaves aren't the same. Didn't flower this spring or summer but cropped up in several places in the established [mostly] wildflower bed. I pulled most of them (since I hadn't seen them before in the bed that's several years old and I didn't spread any new seeds) but left a few to see what they would do, which was nothing but leaf. Still green and hardy after a couple of freezes. Grows more spreading rather than up. Thanks.

It looks like Coreopsis tinctoria foliage.

More pics, showing crown, close up of leaves and hand for size reference. Under 6" tall but a couple are about a foot wide.

Not to further confuse, but Stylophorum is rather rare in that part of the Chicago region. Chelidonium majus looks very much a smaller version of Stylophorum diphyllum. While I can't tell which it is by the photo, you can separate them easily once they fruit shortly after flowering. Chelidonium majus has a long, smooth fruit with no style while Stylophorum diphyllum has a shorter, bristly fruit with a long style.

Hey, I know this one! It's an evening primrose. My mom had some of these in her flowerbed when I was a kid. We used to go outside in the summer at dusk just to watch them open. If you stand right in front of them when they pop open, you'll smell a burst of sweet fragrance. They do look rather weedlike as they get pretty tall and spindly. I really don't know the definition of "weed", since I've seen morning glory seed packets for sale and we battle to keep them off our butterbean plants!

You do have a bit of Portulaca oleracea growing in the photo, just below the topmost plant in the center, the succulent looking, healthy green leaves. I think everything else is lambsquarters, Chenopodium album. They get a reddish-purplish bubbling looking leaf spot that I've read is caused by damage from a particular leaf-hopper, but I don't know that for sure having never witnessed the bug in action. If enough of the leaf is damaged, it gets the look yours has above. The bluish tone to the leaves was my clue, though I may be wrong. Chenopodium has this white sparkly coating on the young leaves that give it an overall bluish look.

You can do a search on line " Coreopsis tinctoria basal foliage" and compare to your plant. The foliage changes over time.

Thanks. Guess I'll just let it be through the winter and see what happens in the spring. It's been growing since Feb/March ish with no flowers. Other coreopsis in that bed bloom and reseed with abandon. They bloomed like crazy, went to seed and died back months ago but these haven't done anything. It doesn't bother me to let them be for now. I just didn't want something that was definitely and invasive weed and take over the bed.
