Can you help identify this fragrant flower?
Comments (16)I was searching for "Nemesia" in the fragrant forum and came up with 2 entries- this one and the highly overrated fragrance FAQ, where someone said Nemesia Compact Innocence had wonderful fragrance. I googled it and came up with a photo and description that looks like your photo: http://www.desert-tropicals.com/Plants/Scrophulariaceae/Nemesia_fruticans.html Compact Innocence Scientific Name: Nemesia fruticans (Thunb.) Benth. Synonym: Antirrhinum fruticans, Nemesia divergens Family: Scrophulariaceae Recommended Temperature Zone: sunset: 16-24 USDA: 9b-11 Frost Tolerance: Takes some frost, it will kill the top and the plant will grow back in the spring Heat Tolerance: Grow as winter and spring annual in the low deserts Sun Exposure: Full sun Origin: Grassland areas of South Africa Growth Habits: Tender perennial, often grown as annual, up to 2 feet tall (60 cm), 2 feet spread (60 cm), depending on the variety; woody taproot Watering Needs: Regular water, well drained, rich soil Propagation: Seeds sown in the spring for summer flowering, cuttings in the spring Cultural Practices: If grown as a perennial, shear to the ground after the blooming is finished Blooming Habits: Vanilla scented, white or lavender flowers, with bright yellow protuberances in the center, similar in shape to small snapdragon flowers, coming almost all the year, but mostly in the spring....See Morecompact hoya?
Comments (6)Helga, Hoya kerrii (the Heat-Leaf Hoya) is even wilder than carnosa. Huge, thick stems that can't really be controlled. At least with carnosa, you can keep putting the vines back into the main plant so it maintains a large but "together" form. With kerrii, you can't do much with the stiff stems except let them go where they may and keep them pruned. I love it nonethless. The other warning about kerrii is not to put it above carpet because the flowers weep the most god-awful dark red sap. It's an utter mess while it blooms. (Still worth it, though!) There are lots of small Hoyas that are trailers and not viners. One of my favorites is tsangsii, with the cutest little red flowers. Lacunosa (as P.C. said) is another good one, with tiny but powerfully fragrant flowers. (Mine's bursting with buds & blooms right now..) Wayetti and kentiana (I can't tell them apart), polyneura (which grows more out and down), obscura, multiflora, incurvula, shepherdii. Denise in Omaha...See MoreCan Anyone Identify This Hoya?
Comments (8)Well that was a fast reply. Now I have to figure out which is 'small form' and which is large form', cant tell the difference between them. The leaves are SO much alike, and the blooms look identical! So..dont know who this is yet. But I have a name!!...See MoreCan anyone think of a Hoya that is easy to bloom and fragrant ?
Comments (21)Highly fragrant include verticillata, australis (especially ssp. tenuipes), lacunosa, pubicalyx (especially 'Pink Silver'), obscura. These are the ones that I smell before I see the blooms. Easy to bloom? Well, that depends on a lot of factors, and it can be different from year to year. I had australis ssp. tenuipes that grew massive and bloomed more flower umbels than I could count. That monster died back and I restarted it and it has never bloomed for me since! What did I do right that one year? I have NO idea! Some years, verticillata blooms nicely for a month, some years it blooms off and on all summer long, and some years it doesn't at all. I wish plants could talk so they could tell us "the secret"! Denise in Omaha...See Moremyermike_1micha
