Flame Maple-Help ASAP
Comments (5)I really appriciate all your help nwnatural. There isnt anything new around it...I did spray for aphids twice, but that was in the spring so its not that. I did 'top' all them a few weeks ago, but I doubt that would be a real problem. It gets as much water as the others, and its actually closer to my house, so I asume that it would have more protection. I went out yesterday to get a closer look at it. The leaves are not drooping, and there doesnt seem to be any sort of bug or anything on them or the stems. The leaves are turning yellow, but their veins are still green. The leaves then get brown around the edges, and fall off. CMK...See Moreamur maples for screening?
Comments (18)You can space the maples as close together as you want. They will grow. However, for screening purposes, you probably reach a point of diminishing returns. The closer they are together, the more they'll compete with each other, and also grow strangely. I would think than anything closer than 4' apart is wasteful, and probably anything less than 6' together is unnecessary. All that said, I really like the suggestion of the column form of hornbeam. These make great screens and I've never even seen one set fruit, let alone spread invasively. And they'll grow anywhere that Acer ginnala will. If the site is perpetually damp, however, skip either Acer ginnala and Carpinus betula and go right to river birch, which is also a dense, twiggy and a decent deciduous screener. Oh, and regarding Acer ginnala, fall color is highly variable on this one. Many seedlings fail to show any decent fall color. Therefore, it is far better to seek out proven cultivars such as "Flame," which will produce known results. Scott...See MoreBest Maple For Fall Color?
Comments (20)I disagree with the notion that Norway maple is in some way inadequate in terms of aesthetics. Babs said "not nice bark, not healthy foliage...." and more and it is that part with which I find disagreement. The leaves are lustrous and thick-looking, the bark is okay, nothing wrong with it, the fall color, while not in the same league as sugar maple or red maple, is still brilliant in many cases. Hey, I totally agree with not planting this tree in situations where it can escape into the wild, which is most situations, but that's due to its invasive potential, not a lack of aesthetic attributes. This is opinion, but after all, I do believe there are reasons that several million Norway maples got planted all over the northern US, and those reasons do not include that it is ugly. One final point: Tar spot, a nuisance fungal pathogen, does impact the foliar quality of N. maple, and to a greater degree than in other maple species. So maybe that's what Babs was getting at, and to that extent, I do agree with her. But that's due to a pathogen, not an intrinsic factor of the tree species itself....See MoreAmur Maple, Acer ginnala
Comments (5)So. Does this look like an Amur Maple? ... finally has leaves out which were not damaged by the freak Artic Spring blast this year. The flower bud cluster has formed, but not open yet. Here is the multi-trunk, this would be very hard to remove without machinery I should think, but I'm am considering it... the surrounding soil is full of small roots also, very hard to even dig any hole more than a couple of inches...See Morenicholsworth Z6 Indianapolis
