Need (very)low-budget dining/living area help
Comments (16)FLOOR - bound carpet remnant. I just bought one yesterday for my eat-in kitchen. It's about 6x8 and I paid $24 for it. I really want a seagrass mat in there, but it's under our everyday table and I have a 3 y/o... 'nough said. I also have bound carpet in our temporary home office, 10x12 and I paid $82 for it. Go to the big hardware store, most have bound remnants in their rug section. It's WAY cheaper than buying a scrap and having it bound. (Big one is from Lowe's, small one is from Menard's.) WINDOWS: My first choice would be a single bamboo shade for the window, same material as the ones in the family room. If you have acess to more red fabric you can make panels to flank the shade. Or you can repurpose the fabric into a patched table runner or placemats or something so you can keep it in the room. My personal preference is all blinds in an open area are contiguous. Same with panels, tho. FAN: I'd go with a chandelier to replace the ceiling fan IF you could center the table under it. (The table looks like it's to the right). Then I'd get an old table top fan and use when a fan was needed. Maybe something like this (I bought the one pictured, or something identical, on clearance for $8 so if you watch, they can be had on tight budgets): OK I previewed so now I can't go back to your pic and suggest a place/foundation for the fan, but... I grew up in a house that had two ceiling fans in the eat-in kitchen -- don't ask me why -- and always hated it so it's easy for me to suggest getting rid of it. :)...See MoreCold room needs warmth to make this a home!
Comments (133)Thanks, R. Simpatico. The rug suggested by celerygirl has more texture than it appears: It is wool and nylon, and it appears "backless." All of those are features which make it easier to clean. The fringe (oddly, I think) is only on one end...and I like that as I can put that under the chairs where it won't look messy. Re: the coffee table, this is my inspiration photo for an arrangement of a "coffee table" and two square ottomans in lieu of one large ottoman: Can you visualize this in my room? (See photo below.) Here's what I like about it: 1) the flexibility of two ottomans for use with the chairs when my family is home 2) the airiness of this arrangement (instead of the two cube ottomans I'd planned) 3) the way this "square" would complete the middle of the room But I want the "coffee table" to be something to rest feet on, as well. Would it look "right" in my room to combine ottomans such as those in the photo with a rectangular ottoman (size and shape of the coffee table, pictured) that is upholstered? Or would it be better to choose more of a bench? To me, it seems like a lot of legs, but the style of legs on the coffee table in the above photo is a nice contrast to all the straight legs. Might celerygirl be so generous as to use her digital rendering [or [or another Houzzer create a new one] to "pop in" potential arrangements of the square ottomans with the coffee table, a bench, or a more solid upholstered ottoman the size and shape of the coffee table? Is anyone out there so into this that you would help me to visualize my style? (so aptly described by kat as "calm, serene and well-appointed" which has really helped contributors to hone in on my taste. Thank you all for hanging in here with me. I am terribly analytical, along with being a perfectionist--which goes right along with being a procrastinator. All curses I must consciously fight in order to make decisions. But I’m getting there, thanks to the patience, vision, and willingness of so many of you who bounce around ideas and make suggestions. With gratitude, I present you with my three granddogs...and my only "girl."...See MoreArc lamp over sectional or more traditional floor lamp?
Comments (36)Hi Clare/CDR Design (and all): I hope you are doing well! I hope you don't mind me reaching out again. I apologize I never replied or thanked you for the last post you wrote. Just recently I decided to start "obsessing" over the look of our living room AGAIN and what it is that drives me nuts. And, holy cow, the changes you suggested made most of my angst about my living room cease! First, changing the direction of the rug...wow! That made the world of difference! It made it seem bigger and finally more cohesive. The rug "or something I couldn't put my finger on" seemed so out of place and wrong. Just that little change did the trick and now it's not so annoying to look at for me. :) I would have never thought about the rug direction if it wasn't for you. So, thank you!! Second, I moved the couch forward and away from the wall. Looks SO much better! I wish I could get a different couch b/c it is so big and I don't like the color however that will have to stay for now. Third, I was inspired by your rendering of the living room you designed and shared with me so I moved the arc lamp over the leather chair in the corner and "I think" it looks good?! Fourth, will def add a console behind the couch instead of a floor lamp! LOVE that idea! Fifth, I moved the orange chair to the left of the fireplace and removed the blue chair however, the orange chair is a bit smaller and seems insignificant and a little odd in that corner (maybe b/c it really doesn't match any of the colors in the rug/room). :) The blue chair just seems like a better fit in that corner (to me). And, there is still room for the orange chair in the other corner even though I moved the couch forward a bit. My kids told me that the couch was too close to the TV when I moved it forward even more than it is now. I think it was b/c they had to crane their necks a bit (hence your wondering if we could move the TV to the other wall...) b/c it is a little high. WIth all of that said, I just wanted to let you know how grateful I am for all of your suggestions! You hit the nail on the head with all of them and were the first person who actually gave me thoughtful and helpful advice! I have asked a lot of friends (many talented decorators in their own homes but not professionally) for their opinions and no one ever gave me such solid advice and recommendations as you. You truly are so gifted!! And have the most amazing vision! Clare, you have brought me this far - I'm wondering if you wouldn't mind helping me finish this project so that I can FINALLY look at this room and think, "YES!" I love this!" I need to be done thinking so much about it! LOL! If you do not have time, then please no worries at all! I am so appreciative of all the advice you have given me already! I'll include my questions here just so you have them and then include pics of the room as it is now in another post but again, please no worries if you aren't able to answer them at this time. 1) Would a different, more neutral rug pull the room together more? Or should I keep the current one I have and work with it? 2) Arch lamp over chair? I also have one that has a gold metal 12" shade that I haven't put together yet. If you like arch lamp over chair instead of the tree next to the chair, metal or white shade? 3) Do I need another arch lamp in the other corner? If so, matching? If not, table lamp or no lamp? 4) Material of console in back of couch? Wood, black, gold metal? Thinking an 8" or 10" W and at least 56" length? 5) PILLOWS!!! My biggest dilemna. There are so many options and I don't know if I should stick with blue/cream/white or add another color!? Thank you SO much for taking the time to read this (if you do) and for everything!!...See MoreI need a third lamp!
Comments (47)Ok, now you will bring a new set of issues lol. 1. I don't see any power nearby to have him put in a junction box, so he will have to fish wires from somewhere.........IDK where that is. 2.I'm just not sure that is the best idea. lol, well he wanted a light, and boy did he get it hahaha. j.k I know you thought you had it! With an older home, you could end up running into issues trying to put a junction box there... So I will go back to what I said before, it just needs to be rewired to the right length and have a switch put where it needs to be, shouldn't cost more than 35 dollars to do that at a lamp store, but any handy person could do it fairly easily. So I say stick with the cord, and do as mentioned above with the cord cover. Also, I know the style is appealing, but having a sconce stick straight out into that area would be well, in the way if you ask me. I would want something that could be push flush to the all when not in use. On a VERY side note, do you think there used to be a transom window above the doorway into the room by the staircase......im just curious I feel like I can almost see the outline. Lastly I still want to see what it looks like to have the smaller floor lamp over there.. This is the lamp I had put in to your room and this is the right scale, plus it has a switch on the backplate https://www.homedepot.com/p/Globe-Electric-McKibbin-1-Light-Matte-Black-Plug-In-or-Hardwire-Swing-Arm-Wall-Sconce-51345/308060249...See MoreHome Interiors with Ease
