Barker cabinet doors with Ikea cabinets? Has anyone done this?
Comments (11)You may absolutely purchase Ikea cabinets without doors either online or in person, whichever you prefer. Each cabinet is really a collection of, say,10 items, each with a part #. At the store, a kitchen person will add the cabinet you want in a Harlig door, for example, and then go in and just remove the door, leaving the other 9 items in your cart. If you go this route, double check size, configuration, and frame color (birch or white) while they're typing it in. Mistakes happen. If you're doing this online, simply select the item you want in the configuration you want, and click on the "Show dimensions, weight and article numbers" link. Then copy each article number into the search button at the top of the page, and the item will appear. Buy it online. Repeat with the next 9 part #s. When you come to a door, just don't buy it. GW is great for some types of info, but you should really check out the Ikeafans web site for more guidance. In order to use Barker doors, you will need the measurements for the doors. You can find these on the Ikea web site if you look hard enough, or you can check out the Ikeafans link below. You'll have to look up info on hinge cup cut out size and location. Barker will cut them wherever you want them, but you need to know what to select/ask for. It is worth comparing the cost of a Barker Cabinet vs. Ikea/Barker Door. For ordinary cabs there's not that big a savings to be had with Ikea. For tall pantry/oven cabinets, or corner cabinets, the difference is substantial. Also, when ordering through Barker Door, make sure to take note of the maximum door width that differs among styles. Good Luck! Comments (27)I have modified Ikea cabinets about every way you can just to see if it can be done. And the answer is - "yes it can be done." But that isn't the right question, the right question is - "should it be done?" This looks like 50 dollars of effort for a 2 dollar return in my opinion. When you start modding cabinets you exponentially increase the risk that something is going to go wrong, or that you are not going to be happy with the results, especially in a remodel situation where the walls may not be true, and this is where a few good spacers make things work well. I think that the 1" spacer on the left is going to cause you problems, after handles you have almost no clearance and I bet you are going to end up with dinged doors. You have good sized drawer bases now (two 24" and a 36") I just don't see that much gain from another 3"....See MoreWhich corner base cabinet?
Comments (18)@equest17, in that case, using the half-moon cabinet is probably your best bet. It is really nice to be able to store some bigger bulky things in those cabinets. And you can set it up so the lesser used items are in the back part of the cabinet. @writersblock that back connector on the cabinet is particle board and not the metal brace like on most of the cabinets. (At least it is on the susan cabinet, and it looks like it on the half-moon.) You could possibly connect a 1x6 to that and the front of the cabinet and use that for the drawer glide. We ended up removing the backs on all our peninsula cabinets and essentially building a little half-wall inside the cabinet so that we could install support brackets for the countertop. Doing something like that would also work....See MoreIkea Ringhult vs Voxtorp- small, warm minimalist kitchen
Comments (8)Ive seen them all. The voxtorp is very matte and paperwhite. You also have the matte walnut and the glossy beige/ivory. No hardware of course because of the integrated handle. I think this style looks best if you keep the lines the I reheated handle creates aligned throughout most of the design. If you need many different sized cabinets with both doors and drawers, I would personally not go for this front. The Veddinge has a low sheen and is a hint warmer- very classic and standard looking- you can play it up with hardware. Ringhult is like veddinge, plain and smooth only in high gloss. IMO choice of hardware is more limited with a high gloss front due to the style. It will reflect light beautifully (I had a Ringhult kitchen 15 years ago) but does it suit the rest of your design and age of the house? High gloss can work well in older buildings (my apartment was from 1929) but I think it takes a little more thought....See Moreascott79
