Furniture Design Dilemma

Furniture Layout in long, narrow living room

It is time for us to replace our aging furniture in the living room. The room measures 25' x 13' but has two doors and a fireplace which constrain our options. I'd like to get a sectional because we spend so much time in the room in front of the fire over the winter.

We currently have a sofa, loveseat and an armchair, but when we entertain the space feels awkward due to the distance between the two farthest points (loveseat and couch). Ideas on possible layouts would be much appreciated!

Below is an option I am considering (the three pieces on the left would be the sectional, with an additional loveseat on the right), but it still seems awkward.

I think your current arrangement is good. Replace the chair and 1/2 and arm chair with two lounge chairs. Perhaps a couple of English roll arm chairs. Keep your rocking chair where it is. For the far right side, consider a game table with couple of occasional chairs. If you're up for it you could flank the window with shelving and allow for a window seat.

Take a look at the below diagram and see what you think.

Here's an illustration of the window seat. You'd just add a table, a couple of chairs and a game of Scrabble!

Sorry, Kim, I was typing at the same time you were, but that arrangement that you have now, is what I suggested below. I really like it. if that wood piece needs to be there, can you put your TV on the long wall where your couch is, put couch in front of windows and chair on the right side of your couch as you are looking at it. May even have room for another chair.....with end tables, coffee table and lamps your room will look good. I assume you will be putting some sort of curtain/drape on the windows. Your floors look very nice and a rug in front of the couch would give it some color.

So... If you are still interested in the Iris chair at all, just want to let you know the chair is actually grey, not brown. They are calling the color Pewter. It looks so brown on my monitor. Here is pic from customer review of Iris loveseat. This is the pillow that also comes with chair. (Doggie not included. 😂 So cute. Precious.) Anyway, even better. You could just toss a grey lumbar into sofa pillow mix - or just simply use only one grey pillow or throw if you prefer! Pics are best posted here in a comment . A to scale plan is alway good showing windows doorways and any other element that might hinder furniture placement like a FP .The room in these pics is alittle longer than yours but the same width I would just put the TV where we have the non functioning FP I think you could put the sofa where had the bench

TV opposite windows works much better -- you can see the the couch squeezes the walkway when you place it as OP proposes. I would have done the drawings as Beverly did. (For that matter, you'll likely find that your TV is wider than that wall between the windows fits comfortably.)

Stay away from big rolled arms. They are hard to arrange because they take up so much room.

No love seat. Also difficult to arrange.

Hang art 6 to 8 inches over the sofa. Try a grouping of all three pictures. One huge picture would be best. Unsolicited advice but at least it is free.

If you want a refreshed look remove the valance and let more light in. Looks like you have a lovely view.

Hi all, thanks for the input!

~Manon - the "window" to the right is actually a door to the sunroom so we have to keep that area clear.

We're also trying to increase the number of seats in the room. We entertain quite a bit and we're always short on spaces to sit.

Maybe the large sectional doesn't work, but perhaps two couches with two armchairs?

The problem is then the room feels off center....

I see. I wasn't sure where the other door way was. Yes, I think two sofas and two armchairs would work. The problem with sectionals is that they really don't seat as many people as you would think, because adults generally like to have their own "space" and no one wants to sit in the corner or the middle.

Ideally you would want the walk way from the the door to the sun room door clear. But because of the off center placement of the fire place and your need to seat larger groups, you may have to bend the rules a bit. How about scooting the window sofa up a bit, to get a more centered arrangement? Sofa tables and consoles are great to stash ottomans underneath for extra casual seating. How would something like this work for you?

It will comfortably seat six adults, eight snugly and nine if you count the ottoman as a casual perch. When shopping for sofas, look for a bench seats. They're a little easier to smush people onto because they don't have any cracks.
