Old fashioned skeleton keys are not that hard to find - better still - its easy to modify many of the locksets (not the keys). The old keys worked because they had grooves(notches) cut to fit the raised ribs in the mortised locksets (pre 1940/30), all you need to do is pull out out the lockset (from the door) and use a grinder to remove the ridges from inside the lockset's cover plate. Heck, most old skeleton keys could be filed down to fit locks for which they weren't intended. Now, I hope I'm on the right track for this post (I live in an old house 225+, I grew up in an old house (built 1908), and I summered in an older house (300+) yrs old (granddad's house). If the key you are talking about looks like an old fashioned key - oval end, straight shank, and a blocky (one or two cut) square shaped head, with a couple of notches in it - the solution is relatively easy, modify the lockset, if I'm offbase; a 1970's (new house), would have a better lockset - you need a good locksmith.

I have some we got from the fellows that helped restore our home.also alot of glass the deadbolt wont do much.I Had a policeman tell us once he could show numerous ways to get in a door with glass.....MY deadbolt is a piece of brass with key hole on outside with a oval piece of brass with about a 1"brass knob on it in the inside.All you do is turn Right till you hear it lock.

Thanks for the help, this has given me a start on places to look online and correct terms to search for. We have no good lock smiths in the local area, at least not of the type that would work on something unusual like this, the ones we do have mostly deal in modern commercial locks. As to vintage door hardware, etc. the nearest place I know of is about 250 miles away, having said that I have been looking for an excuse to go shopping there. The lack of markings so far has been part of the problem, the only marking I have found on the old hardware simply said either made in Italy, or just Italy, I plan to look over it again today, measure the spindle diameter, count threads per inch, etc. Maybe I will get lucky and it will be something common, not metric, etc. I may be able to replace the hardware I have and keep the handles by re-tapping the set screw up one size. However, I learned from my reseller that Ashland Hardware Systems - https://www.ashlandhardware.com - makes their hardware so I may see what they say, but am expecting more of the same since their website isn't even HTTPS.
