Paint Design Dilemma Exterior

Exterior Paint and Trim for Tudor-Style Home

Hello Houzzers!

We need your expertise! We’ve owned our home for almost five years and have spent the majority of our energy (and budget) focused on the inside. Now we’re thinking about changing the paint and trim (leaving the brick as-is) and that’s where we get stuck. The existing tone-on-tone is pleasant, but we’d like to consider something with more contrast. Also, we’re not sure about going with the traditional 70’s Tudor look (e.g. white paint and dark-stained wood). If y’all have ideas, we’d be very appreciative!

Currently the paint colors are a bit cool to work with the warm tones of the stone

I would consider eliminating the Tudor details & create Board & Batten detailing for the gables

Well, personal style is highly subjective. If you are going with historical accuracy, tudor houses tended to be more romantic than craftman style. Craftsman trim tends to be a bit chunkier and substantial looking while Tudors tended to have a lighter feel for window and doors. Thinner boards, less heft, more arches and peaks etc. In terms of general look, craftsmen tends to bring the eye down and highlights horizontal lines giving the structure a well grounded feeling. Tudor style tends to draw the eye up and the peaks have an almost gothic feel. Example - a craftsman window might have substantial trim for each side. It makes the window appear to stretch out horizontally. A tudor window would tend to be narrower to begin with and have relatively thin trim on the side. It makes the window appear to stretch vertically.

Agree. Diamond. Even modest little ranches in the 70's had diamond shapes everywhere. A home like yours, with more semi authentic styling, wouldn't look right with the square. But, there's nothing wrong with your current door that a good electrician and better lighting plan inside the home wouldn't cure. It would be cheaper too. Also, paying an arborist to limb up the trees somewhat would be a way to lighten everything up. It might be a multi year plan though, given the age and character of those great old trees.

I'd call it Tudor, but its probably more accurately a storybook cottage. Whatever you want to call it, what a neat house. It's adorable! I'd prefer a light stucco with dark trim. It's just what looks right to me. The green you have now reminds me a little of the green used in the brick and timber frame farmhouses in northern Germany. Hard to see the condition of the brick. I might leave the brick untouched Paint the stucco and those Tudor style trim boards white. I’d do something interesting with the doors. Maybe replace them with something wood... and some updated outdoor lighting. very nice home. Doesn’t seem to need much on the exterior.

I'm sure it will not hurt your feelings if I confess I like the bottom of your house much more than the upper. I would want to draw the eye more to the pretty details on the ground floor and away from that large gable. I made the upper a darker color and trimmed your landscaping. I can see that you love to garden but only ugly houses need to be completely hidden by plants. Show off your pretty brick. I love the soft contrasts in the brick colors. The other features I thought needed more contrast. I would use brighter trim.

You don't have to tear down the timbering but just paint it the same as the stucco.

I'm not a pro so my images are crude. Use your imagination.
